Hi everyone,

I’ve lost my Spanish Driving Licence and wanted to know if you good people have had any recent experience of getting a replacement.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated

Thanks in advance

Baz

The DGT tells you how to do it https://administracion.gob.es/pag_Home/en/Tu-espacio-europeo/derechos-obligaciones/ciudadanos/vehiculos/permiso-conduccion/perdida-robo.html and it's in English.

Important thing is to report it to a police station and get the "denuncia" first

Thanks, I’ll take a look.

Lost it whilst in UK visiting family so would I still need to report it to a police station when I get back and get a ‘denuncia’?

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain says you must report the loss to the police as you won't get a duplicate without a denuncia.

The advice you are being given in this thread is directly at odds with my own personal experience of replacing my Spanish driving licence when my wallet was stolen whilst I was on holiday in Rome a year ago.

I did not require a denuncio (more in a moment) and did the whole thing online via the DGT website. It was straightforward and the replacement came in the post a few weeks later.

I know I did not have a denuncio because I lost my TIE card amongst other things in the wallet and found I needed a denuncio to replace it. I started the denuncio procedure online, saying the theft occurred in Rome, and went to my nearest police station to sign off the completed papers. This is where the problems started. The policeman processing the denuncio said it couldn't be completed because the theft had occurred abroad. Believe it or not, there is no scope in the system to cope with loss occurring overseas. Whatever you do, if you need a denuncio for other items lost at the same time as your licence, do NOT say it happened in the UK, say you lost it in your local Spanish market!

This denuncio farago caused me much difficulty in getting my TIE card replaced, and all because I was honest. I should have done what I advised you to do. I only got the card in the end because the officials in the police centre in Elche could see that I had started the process online (I had a refernce number) and turned a blind eye to the fact that I hadn't completed a denuncio application because of their own red tape regarding thefts occurring overseas! Be warned.

Hi

As a stop-gap, install the app miDGT on your phone. If you can register and login, you will be able to view your license, which I believe will be accepted if you're stopped by police.

The Catch-22 may be that you need a specific piece of information from your license in order to register (I think it's the date you first received a driving license), but it may also accept digital ID, I can't remember!

Cheers

Steve

Thanks Steve,

Fortunately I’ve already got that so at least I have something until I get the replacement sorted 👍
