Hi as you are a UK pensioner you are automatically covered by the NHS for emergencies

It's not just emergency cover.

"Some former UK residents do not have to pay for NHS treatment when visiting England. This includes:

UK war pensioners
UK government employees
UK nationals living in the EU on or before 31 December 2020, once they have a registered, UK-issued S1"

You may be asked to produce your S1.

I have a follow up question regarding the S1. I am 63 and moving to Spain on a non lucrative visa. When I reach UK pension age (66) can I still invoke the S1 to cover health in Spain, or do I lose that privilege once I become resident outside the UK?

At retirement age and receiving UK state pension you can (at present) apply for  the S1 healthcare forms.

That has always been the case that on retirement age you obtained an S1 form, which enabled you to register for free healthcare in Spain.

If you were resident in Spain on 31 December 2020 once you reach retirement age you could claim your S1. However I’m not sure if that is still the case since the withdrawal agreement.

it certainly looks as though that benefit has continued, but it would be nice to have confirmation from someone who has moved over this year through the NLV process and registered an S1 this year.

Yes it is still the same, it nearly wasn't but there was a change of heart, similarly the continuance of the EHIC.

I suspect at the 11th hour somebody realised that the withdrawal of the EHIC (and S1 because they are interdependent) on Jan 1st. would have meant that UK citizens with health problems effectively could not travel anywhere because it would be impossible, or impossibly expensive, to secure full travel insurance.

Yes, definitely the S1 is there on retirement and receiving the UK pension..
