Hi.  I’d like some advice, please.  We have wooden stairs up to our top solarium.  They get lots of “ weather” and we need the best outside gloss paint that we can buy. We would be grateful for any help.  Thanks.

If you intend to paint raw wood that hasn't previously had any coating on it, then you really need to do the usual primer (to soak into the wood), undercoat (to provide a base for top coat), and then gloss.

I agree completely that there's no point in using cheap paint, especially outside, so go for one of the quality makes like Titan, Xylazel, or Montó.

The following might help:

The problem with stairs, especially outside, is the wear caused by foot traffic. If the wood looks good enough, I'd be more inclined to go with a varnish, possibly breathable, and possibly with very fine grit in it so that it isn't slippery.

Thanks for your advice, Jim. I think we’ll go with one of the good quality gloss paints. Thanks also for all the advice and info you put on the forum. It’s nice to trust someone and know that they know what they're talking about. Jean.

Hi Jean, if you are gloss painting your outside steps, may I add think hard about the wear and tear on the actual steps and their slippyness from the rain. May I suggest either coat just the treads afterwards with a matt coat of varnish which would solve both problems if you dont want to cover them with an alternative covering, but I fear your choice of gloss finish could lead to a dangerous accident.

Regards

Pauline.

Thanks for your advice, Pauline.  We’re thinking of tiling the steps with non-slip tiles.  That way they’ll be safe and maintenance  free.  Reagrds Jean.

Tiling onto wooden steps may be fairly unsatisfactory in the longer term; the wood is likely to expand or contract with the seasons and may cause the tiles to loosen.
