Hola a todos!  I wonder what experiences people have had with online banking in Spain? When I purchased a property in Spain I opened an account with Cajamar primarily for the purposes of paying council tax, utility bills etc.  However their online banking facility is proving a nightmare to manage, not least of all because the online security checks require the account holder to have a Spanish mobile phone number, which I do not have.  As it stands, I cannot access my account or even check my balance.  I desperately need to change to a different bank account that I can access easily from here in the UK, without having to go into a branch and ideally without excessive admin costs.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Best regards, James

I've been using Sabadell online Banking for 8 years and 100% happy with it. I've not been into the actual bank in over 3 years.

The Sabadell app is perfect for me.

I also use (like many on here) Wise Online.

Similar to Steve, we have a Wise account but we also have a Caixa account. No issues with Caixa at all when we were non-residents.

Do be aware that Steve is a Spanish resident who gets his pension paid in to his Sabadell account and pays no fees.

As you are non-resident, Sabadell's fees are 160 euros per year, plus 30 euros for each additional debit card. They also charge 35 euro every couple of years to perform a non residency check.

Hi James,

As a non-resident, most Spanish banks will charge you an account maintenance fee.  If I remember correctly, another member, Paulsav, who is also non-resident and has her account with Cajamar, doesn't pay any account fees, so if you have a mobile phone with dual SIM, the easiest way may be to buy a Spanish SIM card next time you're out here.

Alternatively, you could open a Wise multi-currency account with an EU IBAN, which will enable you to transfer your direct debits from Cajamar to your Wise account and pay them from there.  However, you'd need to bear in mind that Wise has limits on free cash withdrawals, which may impact how you use the account when you're in Spain - unless, if the Cajamar account is fee-free, keep that open and only transfer money across just before each visit for spending whilst you're here.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi

Wise is your best bet!

As Kimmy says, there is a limit on free cash withdrawals, but the debit card is universally accepted - I use mine all the time and just take cash out so I can leave tips.

You won't find a better exchange rate and fees are minimal. There are lots of people on this forum who use Wise, and I can't remember anyone having a bad word to say about them.

Cheers

Steve

Hi James

I, m stunned at your problems with Cajamar as we,ve been with them for 3 and half years now and never had a single problem nor paid 1cent in fees in all that time. Our account is the "weferrent account" online and the app is as simple as any UK banks app. I trust you have selected your app in english, and as "transfers" are not offerred as part of their basic service you need to "contract the service" in your branch. (no fee). I didn't know that at beginning but soon got it added so can now do bank transfers to anyone. I use a Spanish hits mobile sim because I have an alarm with GPS modem which informs me of any activity. I use a dual sim phone and on opening our account at Cajamar agent used same number for both of us ( so I get double the notifications) lol. You also need an extra password called Phone sign, when doing any transfers or setting up new direct debits etc, part of the new security process, but it doesn't change. I,ve recommended Cajamar wholeheartedly as they were the only bank I could find offerring fee free account for non residents. There are no restrictions, no bank bribes like so many others. If you are struggling with operating it pm me a message and I,ll try to help you. My thanks to Kim for mentioning me as she knows I,m passionate about promoting Cajamar.

Regards

Pauline

Many thanks to all for your replies.  I've now set up a Wise account, have had my currency broker transfer some Euros into it and received my debit card.  The mobile app gives me everything I need and so far I am very impressed - so thank you to those who suggested this.   Ref the Cajamar account, I think my online banking woes would be resolved with a Spanish SIM, so maybe I should persevere - at least for the purposes of direct debits for utility bills etc.  Like Pauline, I have yet to receive any fees from them.  Thanks once again, James
