Hi Jim

Sabadell would not allow us to register for this low fee account as we dont get our pensions paid in, they said we would need to open expansion account with the transfer of 700€ month(which we already knew) or have our Uk pensions paid direct in to the account. As we dont wish to do either( transfers back and forth monthly when not in Spain with costs virtually balances out their fees). Having visited the BBVA branch too, I,m opening account with them online. Btw, they dont allow initial opening of a joint account but after activation approx 2weeks, the branch can add a joint person within first 3 months.

Regards

Pauline.

Thanks Pauline. It will be interesting to hear of anyone challenging Sabadell for not complying with the new legislation.

Hi there, we're currently in Pego trying to open a bank account. We went into bbva to open an online fee free account. We were told that we could open an account once we got a couple of documents translated into Spanish, and that we would have to pay 60 euro per year in charges, plus 0.6% per movement.

We thought this was reasonable and so we had the documents translated by someone in Denia. We then went into the Denia branch of BBVA to open the account, only to be told that we would need to take out health insurance at a cost of 40 euro, per person, per month. We refused this, as we are non residents and so they wouldn't let us open an account.

We seem to be getting differing information. We are in the process of purchasing a property and need to get an account up and running. Any advise. We really only need an online account.

Pete, that looks so interresting. Having read the info from your link, the only thing it doesn't mention is paying direct debits, it mentions sending and receiving money but not repeat monthly debits. I have registered my interest so I,ll await further info. Do you pay any spanish direct debits from your account at present?

Thanks for the information

Kind regards

Pauline.

Dave99, what a nightmare. As far as I can gather non residents are still able to bank with BBVA. However the branch agent told me there were fees if opening at the branch so I,ve tried online to open it as it says its fee free. I havent tried again since a few days ago when it just wont accept my pictures the application requires. It asks for DNI so I captured instead the NIE and although it "ticked" as ok later it said picture not suitable. I dont want to ask in branch as I dont want their fees, but I will ket you know if I succeed. Try yourself online through their app, maybe you will be able to do it

Regards

Pauline.

Hi Pauline,

We did try opening an account online with BBVA but it wouldn't recognise a UK phone number. I phoned BBVA but was told I'd have to visit a branch to open the account.

Many thanks Pete, I've registered my interest with Starling.

Hope you get something sorted Pauline.

Hi Pete, thanks for your info, I did try registerrung but their sms with code took too long to come so couldnt complete. I,ll try with the number received and await their new euro account. I dont really want their £ account but if I need to it,ll be an extra to our main bank account. It all sounds good to me though, I,m so sick of Sabadells fees

Regards

Pauline.

I've been with Sabadell for 3 years and I think the fees are generally justified. They provide a fantastic app that never crashes, easy to access, in English.

They have customer support telephone helpline, in English if you want it.

They have a wide network of branches with helpful staff available without prior appointment for one to one queries, in English. Advice is generally free, ie included in the fee.

They also have a massive ATM network that rarely runs out of cash.

I suppose there will always be some that don't see all this as value for money at €140 per annum, but I do.

Hi Pete

totally agree with you,Sabadells fees are not competetive globally and the fee of 13€ per month is astronomic for my service, 4 direct debits per month, cash withdrawals, holding on to my average balance of 3,000€ and paying me no interest, and I,m sorry to say poor representation in english which 4 yrs ago they had a specialist english speaker but now he has gone.

I have read starlings terms, and got to end of application and confirmed my email from the link and it told me it had expired and to start again. Oh my goodness, these applications involving photos and receiving links are my downfall. I have 9Uk accounts and not one gave me this much trouble to set up. I,m feel doomed to stay with Sabadell (but I,ll be trying again tomorrow). I do query the exchange rate with starling using a "bank exchange rate" as I dont think its as good as the official currency rate and the charge of .4% fee eqates to losing 4cents in a euro after I spend my time only transferring when the rate is at its best. While it says they dont charge a fee for atm use it does point out the atm owner might charge a rate. Hmm not sure its the best use for abroad use but I,m just registerring(if I can) to see more about the euro account. But we dont use cards for purchases just atm withdrawals so question this as they dont have their own atms.

I,ll reserve judgement until I see their euro account terms

Regards

Pauline.
