I think you are simply following the pattern between husbands and wives regarding central heating. One wants it high the other hates the heat. Me and mine have reached compromise and have it on lower than recommended but slip on an extra layer ie top/ cardigan etc.
The general advice is if you have thermostatic controlled radiators then turn them down in rooms where full heat is not required. Generally bedrooms should be around 60 degrees, living rooms 21 degrees with bathrooms taking the chill off as they will warm by the use of hot water.
The other debate which gas boards, money saving do called experts etc., cant agree on is leaving the heating on all day ( say 8.00am till 10.00pm) or on in the morning pror to getting up for a hour and then end of the afternoon say 4.00pm til you go to bed. I find if you leave the heating on all day it stops turning on and off by about 11.00am and comes back on around 4.00pm anyway.
Your hot water should get enough heat put into it while the rooms are getting heated without needing to heat the water separately.
Heating the house is controversial. Someone who works outside ( particularly in cold climes like UK) get used to lack of heat and tend to suffocate when entering a normally warm room.
Good luck
