I think you are simply following the pattern between husbands and wives regarding central heating. One wants it high the other hates the heat.  Me and mine have reached compromise and have it on lower than recommended but slip on an extra layer ie top/ cardigan etc.

The general advice is if you have thermostatic controlled radiators then turn them down in rooms where full heat is not required. Generally bedrooms should be around 60 degrees, living rooms 21 degrees with bathrooms taking the chill off as they will warm by the use of hot water.

The other debate which gas boards, money saving do called experts etc., cant agree on is leaving the heating on all day ( say 8.00am till 10.00pm) or on in the morning pror to getting up for a hour and then end of the afternoon say 4.00pm til you go to bed. I find if you leave the heating on all day it stops turning on and off by about 11.00am and comes back on around 4.00pm anyway.

Your hot water should get enough heat put into it while the rooms are getting heated without needing to heat the water separately.

Heating the house is controversial. Someone who works outside ( particularly in cold climes like UK) get used to lack of heat and tend to suffocate when entering a normally warm room.

Good luck

The Brico ones are of unknown origin. What I probably SHOULD have said was getting hold of Danfoss or Honeywell is difficult.

Dear Flamencalady,

I think you are being very even tempered. Your new husband seems to be a man who is keen to save the pennies.  You seem to be well suited as I would have committed murder by now.  All joking apart, you are fortunate to have central heating in your spanish home. Perhaps you should look at other ways of keeping your house warm all the time. You shouldn’t need to have the central heating running for 8 hours daily here in Spain. If you are feeling cold, perhaps you should use the aircon heating programme. Probably cheaper and is pretty instant too.   Do you have good double glazing in your house?  If not, perhaps you should install in the main rooms. Do you have an open fire? If so, light the fire late afternoon and that should keep you cosy.

Ask your husband how much he believes it cost him to heat his last house in the U.K.  per month in the winter. Check to see what it costs you here. If less, no worries.  If more, there is something seriously wrong.

sWe don’t live here but have become pretty good at keeping our house cosy while in residence. A good oil filled radiator works well on cold evenings supplemented with the aircon.  If your new husband doesn’t feel the cold, buy a duel controlled electric blanket for your bed. I can’t believe that your house could be so cold that you need to heat it all day long.  Good, well lined curtains on your windows may also help. Make sure there are no drafts. The spanish Close their shutters to keep heat in and to keep the heat out in the summer.
Sit down and discuss the problem.  You are driving him mad and he is driving you mad so get something sorted ASAP.

Good luck!  When we  were young, newly weds kept one another warm with body heat!  It still works when you are old.

I am a professional engineer.

Set the rads at the temp you need then leave them alone. Constantly resetting them will not save you any (any) money, I can promise you.

If you ever do close one off, always back it off one turn.

In the summer when the system is not on, put it on (just for a few minutes), once a month (pumps have a habit of seizing, and it does no harm to disturb the sediment in the system.

my husband is a plumber you do not need to keep bleeding the rads leave them alone unless they are cold when on leave them alone. you are wasting gas or electric if you boil water for washing up turn the tap on and use the hot water that comes out of the tap leave alone what you don't understand
