Hi, we were in Spain we we applied for the account. You only need your passport for the identity checks which are done using your smartphone (we used our UK phone). I used my NI number as an id (non resident) but you could use your NIE if you have one.

We applied for the free account and received the debit card in about 4 days. We use Transferwise to fund the account and it works very well, money usually arrives in under 5 min's. The customer service is all done in english via chat and is very efficient.....I accidently sent funds to the wrong community account and it was returned within 24 hours.

Once the account is opened it's tied to your smartphone. You can access your account using a laptop but your login will need to be authenticated by your phone.

Unfortunately no money can be put in the account sooner than 15 days before the appointment to sign off.
This is the problem because the whole reason for opening was to put the appropriate funds in the account and start making regular transfers as a belt and braces for the residency application. She could of then just got the gesture to apply for residency without the need to get an NIE before the application.
So back to square one!
Think we may just have to take our chances and open the account mid November and partly use the Transferwise account to prove the funds prior to opening the spanish account etc. Nothing we can do. Just hope our Gestor can help.

We made an appointment from the UK to open a non resident Sabadell account (again) for our residency application. When we arrived we signed the usual rain forest worth of paper, presented our passports, P60 and UK bank statements and were told the card would arrive in 5 working days. We naively thought that the card would arrive in branch as we were already in Spain but they sent it to our UK address! Top tip.....Ask for the card to be sent to branch.

Luckily our son was able to send us a pictures of the cards and we were able to activate one and use the Sabadell "wallet" app to use our phone for local payments. We are currently back in the UK and have another 2 months to wait before we can apply.....However, we are going to apply as soon as we return to spain in October so that we get the process date stamped. They may refuse us because of the lack of statements but we will have started the process which seems to be the main thing.

Its a lot of hassle but hopefully worth it. I'm with Sabadell and have been for years.

Shame about the N26 account which looks good but no advantage for us at this time. She will just have to continue with Starling and Transferwise until we can get to Spain to open an actual Spanish account.

We may start looking for a free Spanish bank account as as soon as the application is done and residency is sorted the account would be closed.

We opened a Sabadell account last year before our NIE came through, it was about 30€ /qtr, but we needed passports and gave them a uk address for the cards. When we got our residency this year, the fees disappeared and they threw in a credit card too, and updated to our Spanish address with no problem

Thanks for the update.

I'm sorted its just my partner. They will open the account for her whilst in the UK but you can't put any funds in until 15 days prior to actually going into the branch to sign off. This is no advantage to show the three months activity.

We will just have to take the chance and go to the bank in person when we are next in Spain to put the funds in. We may as well then go to a free Spanish bank as after residency it will not really be used.

As long as the application goes in before the end of the year we should be okay. I remember a post somewhere saying that you had until June 2021 to get everything finalised.

All a big rush.
