Some people have a greater aptitude to learning languages. I'm not saying the doctor wont know ailments, but can get changed in translation.

One example. I went to the doctors with a chronic cough, now waiting for referral. However the doctor used google translate to confirm some symptoms. The word used for mucus when he used his translator became bugger 🤔. That's what I mean by changed in translation😁....

...

Just for next time mucus in spanish is mucas, said with an accent, my daughter had from birth until about 2 so I learned it very quickly. Like I said even with English doctors when it comes to medicine it still needs translating lol.

I disagree, most Spanish have no EI especially Doctors or Nurses, everytime I went to visit my husband in Torrevieja hospital the staff were always standing around talking amongst themselves and completely blanked you if you had the temerity to ask for any help and interrupted their cosy chats. N...

...o one checked on him, he was given nothing but a small bottle of water, no food, that was 3 years ago and I dont hold out any hope things have improved.

I dread having to go into hospital for an operation i would never find a nurse to administer any pain relief. Plus the cost of funerals here is just ridiculous when you can get a no frills cremation in the UK for approximately 2k I also understand the paperwork required if you leave a spouse/partner is a whole new level of hell.

Whats no el?

I personally don't think your experience has anything to do with you not speaking Spanish, if the nurses are that sh**ty with you  then the chances are that they are jsust sh**ty people and like that in general unfortunately

Thank you for clarification. At last someone else who agrees. I have a friend who speaks reasonably fluent Spanish but still has to take her Spanish son in law to hospital appointments with her.

Yes. I had already got that. However he didn't tell me the word and just typed into google translate. He said 'you get' then showed me the word 'BUGGER' on his phone. Was quite amusing at the time

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

You mention the pluses of residing in Spain  and there are pluses but also minuses ,we have bought ,sold and are in process of buying another home in Spain  and can see the costs involved  also ,Spain has a high  financial threshold  for residency  and a low threshold compared with UK for taxation purposes ,so in my opinion not.everything is in Spains favour

It's not much better here in Spain we a have a coalition government who struggle to get any reforms through,  and if they are lucky enough to then the regions wont implement the changes. ( source El Pais).

Here on Orihuela Costa Bascunana has been charged with embezzlement. All they keep doing is building more and more properties with no infrastructure to support the extra demand on services such as health & roads, even though Spain has a huge number of empty properties that have been standing ...

...empty for years, which means the services for residents are getting worse and worse. The price of electricity went through the roof in Spain months ago, food prices have been on the rise for sometime, likewise the cost of fuel. Staff are leaving in droves from both Torrevieja Hospital and what few health centres we have due to the running of the hospital and health centres being handed back to the ministry of health, 200 temporary staff contracts were terminated a few days ago, resulting in wards being closed.

A large ugly apartment block is being built in Punta Prima with one small road allowing access to the N332, which is going to be more congested than it currently is if that is possible. At the current rate of building on the coast there wont be any coast left. Since roughly 2014 council owned land situated in Orihuela Costa has been sold by the council raising in excess of well over €25,000,000 which has been added to the coffers of the municipality. This figure is substantially less than originally anticipated netting far less than their true values so basically sold off at greatly reduced prices. What else could be expected when selling land for construction when the economy was recovering from the bottom  of the biggest recession Spain had seen in years. The present administration are totally ignorant about the needs of those of us who live on the coast and decided in their wisdom that the land was surplus to requirements and would raise much needed funds that could be invested in new projects but not for Orihuela Costa. When it comes down to it wherever we live only one thing matters MONEY certainly not people.

Brexit is for a generation at least. Governments change often and if this shower in Spain do a bad enough job maybe change will come soon.

There is no queing for petrol anymore. At least not the last 2 times ive been . People i know are selling up in spain are  in their late 60s to 80s and have been here years.

let’s face it, everyone new we was leaving the EU plan and simple really isn’t it, Only one short Tito day after readysll the posts relating to this subject. Why spend years living in a country, you obviously prefer to England or you wouldn’t choose to live here, without applying for residency years ago when it was a lot easier to process Plain and simple really, the people that have lived here for years without applying for residency until Brexit are a little bit hmmmmm putting it bluntly.
And let’s face it, everyone knew when they voted to leave the EU in 2016 that things were going to change so why not use the four year period to get your  paper work in order other than wait until the dead line.

Like another post  that someone has mentioned on here,  problems are in all countries and for such a small island the U.K. is in disarray with just about everything at the moment and it doesn’t look likely changing  for the foreseeable.

Spain or the U.K. ?  Spain hands down if you are already a resident.

Obviously Spain is not heaven on earth but it ticks a lot of boxes for me.First thing to do to improve your enjoyment is try to learn and speak Spanish even if not to a good level. If I need to get something across for the first time I google translate it,practise it then use it.I got my residencia under the WA and will always believe the brexit was the biggest mistake in a generation.Been retired over 4 years from when I turned 57 and can honestly say I’ve loved just about every minute in Spain.
