Hi, me and my wife have just acquired our residencia, our next task is to exchange our driving licences. Is there anybody who could help us in this task as although we are learning Spanish we just don't feel confident enough to do it on our own. Thanks

Hello, we used Uma at getlegalinspain.com. She met us at the test centre then sent off the paperwork for us, licences arrived @ 4 weeks later.

Hi

If you are just exchanging your licence for a Spanish one I have been told the medical is not required, it is required if your licence is due to expire and you need to renew it.

No mention on the DGT site but maybe I missed it when I booked my appointment, but mine is due for renewal in 2 years anyway.

I will obviously have to look into it but I also based my post on a reply from Jim on a topic re driving licences on page 41 of this forum.

10 years is the maximum validity of a Spanish licence, 5 years for over 65's.

Look for habla conmigo - translation/Spanish classes Orihuela Costa on Facebook. Victoria Scott is brilliant and reasonably priced.

Just to clarify for anyone who is confused, there are two options when changing to a Spanish license.

You can exchange it without a medical and just get a license valid for the remainder of the time left on your UK license.

You can take the medical and get a license valid for the full period of validity for your age.

It's all spelled out here:

Hi Kim, you've just found an omission in my guide to the subject, and for that I apologise.

DGT say in their description of the exchange process:

The holder of a driving license issued in one of these States that has acquired his normal residence in Spain will be subject to the Spanish provisions relating to his period of validity...

So, although there were twelve years left on your UK license, the Spanish license would only be issued for ten years for group one classes, and five years for group two, if you're less than 65.
