Cancellation excepted whichever way Brexit pans out the overwhelming concensus (not to mention official UK government advice) seems to be that it's better to have a Spanish licence than a UK one so if it boils down to a toss up between 'losing' two years and potentially having to take a Spanish test - well I'll let you work that one out for yourself!

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Have read so many conflicting reports on this and I have my appointment in Elche to exchange my licence in a couple of weeks time so glad for some clarity. Like you I will lose about two years but happy with not requiring a medical.

According to this .. a 'Medical' is required for exchange and renewal of driving licences

I thought UK licences were issued for 10 years only?

We applied online three weeks ago, through links supplied by Jim, who is very helpful.

We are Exchanging our licenses to Spanish ones. Not renewing!

No medical needed.

First available appointment is mid May in Elche.

I had the same experience in applying, applied in November and have my appointment in February. No medical required as it is an exchange.

I would advise because of the No Brexit situation to exchange before Renewal is due.

Much easier but waiting times will get longer the nearer Brexit date happens.

Well the rules must have changed re Medicals for 'exchange'.  I have always believed that this was a prerequisite

The rules haven't changed - it's just the terminology used.

Exchange is a swap without a medical to get a license valid up to the expiry date of a UK license.

Renewal needs a medical and you get a license valid for the full period to which you are entitled.
