Hello All

Hope everyone is well.

Looking for a bit of advice please. Our Ikea fridge freezer broke down a few months ago. An engineer came out, ordered a part, but due to covid has only been able to fit it this week.

Half an hour after he left there was a loud bang and the mcb tripped. He came back an hour later and said the control panel had  blown. He said it would be at least two weeks before the part would arrive.

To be fair to the engineer he is trying, but how many attempts do we allow to fix it before we ask for a replacement or partial refund? I understand in the UK 3 attempts is usual- but we are in Spain.

Any help appreciated, but kind answers please!

Inform Ikea and tell them that you want the fridge replaced under guarantee, which is 2 years after purchase.  Do not settle for anything else!

Thank you.

I've already asked them for a replacement, but as yet they are insisting on repairs. I wondered if there was any statutory law to back up my request?

Hi Chocaholic,

Whilst a 2 year guarantee is standard in Spain, it depends how long you've had the appliance before the fault develops.  If within the first 6 months, IKEA should replace or repair, as you choose, because the fault is deemed as having been present at manufacture.  After 6 months, the onus is on you to prove the item was not fit for purpose.

Kind regards,

Yes there is a statutory law.  In the EU the Law of Guarantee on ALL goods and services is 2 years - NOT 6 months.  It is prohibited in LAW to define a guarantee less than 2 years!!  Google it if in doubt.   You DO NOT have to prove that the appliance was not fit for purpose!!

Also, consider the fact that Ikea have a 2 year guarantee from their distributor or manufacturer - they are not going to lose a penny!!!!

I have explained this to several shops and firstly been met with incredulity and then, when they have informed their supplier and had their money returned, with a handshake and great thanks!

Richard,

Your original post offered no help.  As Chocaholic responded to my post, at least she now has details of he applicable consumer law.

I did not say the guarantee is less than 2 years - it's how any fault is remedied that is affected by the time that has elapsed.  Please read the link before resorting to unwarranted capital letters.

Regards,

Kim
