Hi everyone

I can't say I am happy with the situation and the problems we face with the prospect of moving to Spain!

I was a remainer of course and it now seems that my reasons are coming to fruition !

For no fault of our own we were unable to get to Spain last year mostly due to the pandemic.

Looking back at the responses we had read from the Spanish Government it seemed to not be to much of a problem to carry on with our plans even after the 31st of December 2020 and the Spanish had given us the idea we had no need to worry.

Although we left the EU the majority of the UK wanted to stay in the EU but there was a very deceitful campaign that forced the remainers out.I for one see myself as European yet can't move around Europe freely.

Well the feed back we get now is quite hostile towards the UK people!

For me this hurts as I have family in Spain and that has been for the past 47 years at least 8 members of my family live there.

What to think and where do we go from here ? I have ways intended to move to Spain with my Wife and children but now I feel resentment coming from the EU despite me wanting to be an EU member for the sake of my children my Wife and myself.

I hope that when things calm down we can come but it would have to be in the not to distant future.

We had had our house up fir sale and I was winding my job then the pandemic hit.

I do hope Spain takes a different approach and helps people such as us move and build a life in Spain .

In the long term people may turn to other countries to holiday in if they feel they are being punished or resented.

I wish we could turn the clock back and have our neighbours back on side. Good luck to l those in Spain and to those who are attempting to go !

Having read your input if you can meet the current criteria financially and fill all the correct paperwork and get

registered correctly there should be very little problems !!!  Now it is coming home to bite the ones who couldnt be

bothered to play it straight with the Spanish Authorities .Personally we know 4/5 couples that have enjoyed the lifestyle it Spain brings ??  that are unable to get back to their homes there .So much for keeping under the Radar !!!

As for the vote on Brexit it was 51% to LEAVE and 49% to STAY no use moaning now that things are not going your way .

I don’t think there is any resentment or hostility against Brits from EU countries and their citizens. It’s simply that the rules are different for third country nationals post Brexit. It’s harder to become resident in Spain, although not impossible. The Withdrawal Agreement provides protection for those Brits living in Spain during transition but that has now ended.

Good luck.

Hi thanks for the reply it's a shame more people didn't vote as the outcome would have been different!

Best wishes Jeff

Although personally I think the whole affair is a catastrophic nonsense, objectively around 76% of the eligible population actually voted. This is a much higher proportion than is usual for any kind of public consultation, be it election/referendum/local litter picking group etc.

Hi Jeff,

I'm sorry to hear the rules for Third Country Nationals make it much harder for you, but I don't understand where you have the idea that Spain has become "hostile" to Brits?  From where have you got that feedback?

Kind regards,

Kim

I can't imagine that any EU country has become hostile to legal immigrants from the UK. Like any country, they will rightly be hostile towards any illegal immigrants from anywhere in the world.

The rules for legally moving to Spain have changed due to Brexit. There is absolutely no point whining about that.  It is what it is.  If you want to move to Spain then it is a case of rearranging your affairs to make sure that you meet the requirements of whichever appropriate visa.

Jeff58 - as a fellow remainer I feel for you regarding the loss of freedom of movement and the anger at the the lies people were sold.  BUT I have to disagree that Spain and other EU countries are being in any way nasty or difficult to the UK nationals wanting to move to EU countries.  It is entirely the decision of the UK government that the situation has changed, they decided the UK would leave the SM as well as the EU and made UK citizens Third Country Nationals.  In fact I would go as far as saying that Spain and others are RESPECTING the decision of the UK government by treating UK citizens in the manner requested, ie treating them as TCN.  Surely to make exceptions to the TCN rules just because someone is British would be disrespectful of the British government's decision.

I think you are right but there does seem to be a cut and dry approach and considering the pandemic I was hoping for some sort of a life line for those who were affected in such a way that they could not meet the deadline ! Stay healthy Jeff

Hi Jeff, I hope you find a way to still move.  I think we all hoped for far too much from the British government - we hoped for common sense and honesty, but those hopes were sadly dashed.  Of course, in most people's thinking, it would have been sensible in the light of covid to extend transition, which might have given you the extra time needed.  I just don't see anyone is to blame except the British government for the problems, most of which were avoidable, they just don't care (sadly) about ordinary people.  Good luck.
