Brits have used their FoM for many years, it seems many having done so without appreciating that it is one of the privileges of EU/SM membership.  Blame those who voted to change the status of Brits and the UK government for deciding to leave the SM, not Spain, for the change in status and move to becoming a TCN.  It is a big disappointment for many.  Maybe Spain will review this in the future but on the other hand they may not see any need to make a special case for Brits, why should they?  Personally I think Spain will court the other SM countries more to compensate for the loss of Brits , after all, most of Spain is not dependent on British retirees to fund the local economy so the only real losses will be felt in the Brit 'colonies' where the locals chose not to integrate after emigrating.

Yes s&u will be begging the Brits to come in the summer as we are the biggest contributors to your economy so I have €30,000 in savings a £200,000 house with no mortgage €700 a month in rental income from my house and about €12,000 to start me in my first year and this is not good enough to move to Spain it may be because you want to get rid of all the crap and try and move to a middle-class economy which you are far from and a lot of foreign nationals in England claim on the national health service to support them and I do hope that the housing market crashes to teach your government a lesson that people who would like to buy property there now cannot because of this silly demands

Hi could also do what the majority do as the Spanish estate agents are so sly they will let you rent properties without having to show your nie cards etc

If you are incapable of holding a conversation in a way that doesn't come across as overtly confrontational and offensive then you should not expect people to respond to you to further explain what I believe was a relatively simple set of calculations.

I have put you on my blocked list as I don't need the hassle.

Hi George,

I doubt I'm the only one who has reported Thomasb's post.  You tried, we all tried to explain the situation and it's clear he's not interested.  He's so angry and bitter, but that doesn't excuse him directing his foul mouth at you.  The asterisks don't disguise the intent of his message.  Totally unacceptable.

Best wishes,

Kim

ThomasB: Why would I be begging for Brits to cone 'here' as my 'here' is the UK?  I have a second home in Spain.  Your comments are not really in keeping with the purpose of this forum, which is friendly, helpful and informative.  I am not going to comment on your personal circumstance,(that is your own business).  Saying things like "you can stick Spain where the sun doesn't shine", "hope that the housing market crashes" and "F*** off off" will hardly endear you to anyone.

It seems you are happy to complain about foreigners in the UK but wanted to move to Spain and be a foreigner yourself, (note past tense as you state you have changed your mind).  Hypocritical at best.  You want the UK to exercise sovereignty over who comes to the UK but don't agree Spain should exercise its sovereignty over who moves to Spain.  Again Hypocritical at best.

Frankly, Spain does not need Brits with some sort of misplaced superiority complex or an attitude of "they need us more than we need them".  Blame those who voted leave if you don't like the consequences of their vote, after all every leave voter i have spoken to claims they 'knew what they were voting for' so must have known about this!  The Spanish have respected the UK's wishes to become a third country, hence implementing the pre-existing and appropriate rules.

What I am saying is the amounts of income the Spanish has said you have to have have a stupid because a lot of the Spanish I'm not turning that that so it should be b.a. sum of money that is an average in Spain and as there is a lot of property in Spain I don't think they are earning the money the governments are expecting non-EU people to be earning so let them myp2 country and I hope a lot of British do not holiday there this year well they may not be anyway because of the covert and hope this will squeeze that economy again

So you do not agree that the Spanish government should be the ones to decide the level of income they say certain nationals should earn before moving to Spain.  How strange as you are so keen for the UK to decide their own immigration policy.  Whether you or anyone else considers it 'stupid' is irrelevant, it is the decision of the democratically elected Spanish government, and 4xIPREM has been used for many years by them for most non-EU migrants.  As previously pointed out, it is a matter for each sovereign government to set their own immigration criteria (for those outside of the EU FoM rules) and a national of another country should respect that. Yet again you wish bad things on everyone in Spain because you personally don't like a rule that now applies to you because of the actions of the UK government.  It is good that you have decided not to move to Spain; why would you move to (or even visit) a country of which you have such a low opinion of the government and their immigration policy and wish bad things on the residents?

Hello Thomasb

The questions you have asked today are the same as the ones you asked me by P.M. last week & which I answered. You continue asking questions on the forum & then insult the people who respond & try to explain. It's all unnecessary & rude  so I suggest you seek your information elsewhere - maybe the Spanish Embassy in the UK....when they reopen.

I concur with what you have written - and to be fair, it is not conjecture or opinion, it is simply the facts as they are today.

Spain has done nothing. It's rules haven't changed. (Ok - IPREM got an inflation adjustment but that is to be expected and is irrelevant in the overall scheme of things for most people seeking to move permanently to Spain).

It is the UK that has changed its status as a consequence of leaving the EU. What remains to be seen is whether Spain chooses to revise its requirements on TCNs as a result. I don't think any of us can try to second guess that.

I do have one continuous bugbear with Spain (and I have mentioned this in other posts) and that is that they didn't enforce the >90 day rule to apply for residency. This has resulted in people thinking the freedom of movement restrictions relating to Schengen are harsh when it's likely that those who it impacts were in breach of national law anyway (overstaying without applying for residency).

But that is applicable across the Schengen zone not just Spain so it's not fair to just pick on the Spanish government. All could do better in that regard.

And the (paraphrased) remark that the Brits are the largest contributor to the Spanish economy is completely inaccurate. Spain has a large industrial and agricultural economy, to which ‘tourism’ adds only 11% of GDP. It simply superficially appears greater in the areas heavily populated by mainly British expats.
