We are coming for a weeks rest late September and fancy a bit of an adventure. Can we get to Playa by public transport from Corvera Airport? We've sorted out our return to Alicante (any advice on that trip would be appreciated)

There is no public transport from Corvera.That is one of the main reasons that more people are prefering to use Alicante.You will need to book a private transfer,which is about €60.
