Anyone got any easy ideas how to remove surface rust from there chair arms ( as in photo) without having to paint them? Thank you in advance.

Hi,

The simple answer is 'no'. You can certainly remove the rust, either mechanically or chemically, but the surface area will differ in colour/finish without some form of refinishing.

If you remove the corrosion mechanically (sandpaper/wire brush) then you will need to apply some protection to the bare metal areas (paint). If you remove the corrosion chemically, it will still need some form of refinishing to return the painted arms to an even colour.

Unless of course another member on the forum has a different solution.

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, sorry about that.

Regards,

Bob

There's no easy way, once the rust starts you can either paint over it using something that stops rust and adds colour (search for Hammerite paint).

Or, as you don't want to paint then you can buy sports tape, like bicycle handlbar tape or tennis racket tape and wrap that around the metal frame, as in your photos, the rust is in an area where it will stain clothing and towels.

I would expect those sort of chairs etc. to be alloy not steel, certainly what you picture looks more like minor alloy corrosion than rust.

Unfortunately there is no practical way to repair such blemishes without some sort of remedial painting.

Yes it is the lighter weight metal but not aliminium, I tried rubbing an area with some toothpaste with a non scratch white scourer and it did remove the rust without ruining the paint took a while though, I was just hoping for a quicker less painstaking way as it is a shame to throw them out, they have always been put away in the winter.

I have some wet and dry sandpaper that is very very fine, I will give that a go, thank you, it will be better to varnish than mask out and paint. 🤞
