Good morning,

Heard a rumour yesterday!! So, is it true that once you become a Spanish Resident, you also have to apply for a Spanish driving licence and take a test.

Thanks

YES! You have to arrange for a medical - mainly sight test - at a licensed optician - not all of them do it as they have to be officially recognised by Trafico - which will involve sight tests/ basic medical check and also driving tests which will consist of various tests on driving simulator. Should you have any kind of physical difficulty which could affect driving then the simulation is a little more involved to include manipulation of controls etc. Once you have passed this, you will be given a form and would advise you then to go to a ‘gestor’ who deals with driving licences and they will make the application for you. Remember to take all ID paperwork- in triplicate as usual! - and expect to pay them a fee for the service; they will take your UK licence and send it off to your local Trafico together with all necessary evidence. Trafico should issue new licence and return your UK one to. DVLC - they will also check up on details with DVLC. Incidentally, they will not deliver licence to a PO box, it has to be to your residential address - which can cause endless problems as it did for us as there is n postal delivery to our house!

It’s not as onerous as it sounds, but as usual, there are hoops to be jumped through.

We foolishly assumed that as the gestor knew we only had a PO box, that it would be delivered to her, but learnt later that this is not permitted. Several months passed, the temporary licence issued by the gestor had been renewed so many times that it couldn’t be done again and the gestor shrugged. However, a Spanish lawyer whom we know personally logged onto Trafico website using all our details, and found out that it had been issued two week s after the application but had been returned to Trafico Office as undeliverable.. We then made an appointment at the Trafico Office and discovered when we attended that it was in a ‘cupboard’ together with all other undeliverable documents. Why, in this day and age, an email couldn’t have been sent to somebody - us? - to suggest that we went in person to Trafico to collect this, I have no idea. I had asked the gestor if we could go in person to be informed - obviously wrongly - that this was not permitted. However, we now have them, so would suggest to anyone else still struggling that you find a friendly lawyer!!! And go yourself!

Absolutely correct Kimmy, but the Gestoria whom we used were long established and suggested by our lawyer who has been practicing here for 30 years, so we assumed competency!!

Thanks for your reply Kimmy.

Haha don’t think it’s a good idea to “Go your own Way”
