Hi,we have visited our solicitor for the first renewal and handed in all our paperwork which was requested on the help sheet and lawyer ticked it off as correct and handed over 600 euros. Today we had an email requesting a new marriage licence as it has to be no more than 6 months from issue and ...

...then sent to the haigh for apostle. The marriage licence was never documented on the guidance sheet and we will never get one in time to renew within 90 days. This evening I have requested a meeting with the lawyer for tomorrow to try to get it resolved,I am hoping that it is a mistake,we have been married for 42 years and our marriage licence was accepted at Manchester for the initial visa

I am sure  there is no date on your marriage certificate the only date stamp will be from having Apostille . We never had a new one when we went to the Spainish consulate a few weeks ago. . A new copy will take 3 days to a uk address. Good luck .

Hi all, Just an update about my driving tests, and as you know I passed the driving theory test after 10 days of studying for 4 hours a day and doing lots of example tests in the theory book and on line.

Well myself and another lady pensioner started our driving lessons and after 1 hour 20 mins  each driving around Orihuela we returned back to the school and the other lady student asked how many lessons we would need to pass the test. We were shocked when the instructor said we would need another 18 lessons, that would be a total of 20 lessons at 30 euros a lesson which is a total of 600 euros, plus the 430 euros for signing up to the theory test.

So Anyone  going the NLV route as I did from UK has to account for this needless test at a cost of 1000 euros and I can tell you that if you are a pensioner it is very stressful.

Myself and my co student both thought we would only need about six lessons to familiarise ourselves with the nuances of passing the test and familiarising ourselves with orihuela. Many other people had said you have done the hard part in passing the  theory. Both me and the other lady have both been driving in Spain for nearly 20 years and myself have been driving around Torrevieja for the last 6 months without any problems .

Has anyone taken the test as a result of being penalised for getting residencia by the nlv visa route, I would be very interested in your stories.

It seems that Spain is alone or one of a few EU countries penalising UK NLV entrants, whereas the UK still allows the Spanish to drive in UK indefinitely without the stress and expense of taking a new test.

In conclusion, I am saying that if this inept and ridiculously Draconian law is not rescinded soon then a lot of older people are going to have great difficulty passing these tests and I hear that  many people are suffering already.

I am a quite fit 73 year old and mentally stable  but I can tell you it has caused me a lot of  teeth crunching stress, and it will be worse for lots of older people

If one should confer that it's fair that older people should take a test then we should say that everyone over the age of 65 in Spain should have to retake a test.

Am I angry yes, it's not the capability of passing the test although for many it will be difficult,  it's the injustice of the situation that is the problem.  I would love to confront the people making this ridiculous situation, but they hide behind the shields of power. What would happen if people couldn't pass the test at all, that means they would have wasted all the time and money moving to Spain for nothing

. I would like to see their grandparents to be put through this pathetic charade. they have got away with this law, because like cowards, they pick on minority groups.

I'm not normally vociferous  but  sometimes you have to make a stand and not mince your words.

As I am taking the test soon, I have spent the last 3 days driving around Orihuela for 2 hour sessions, I could do this all day long it's not a problem once you get to know the roads and the vagrances of a new place.

Hi

My daughter is doing her test next week.  Because she lives near Murcia she has to do her test in Cartagena.   You are in a better position since you can drive around orihuela which you are use to.  The only other option was Murcia and that is awful.

Although she is a very good driver she is nervous.  Her driving instructor seems to be realistic and is more interested in getting people through the test as soon as possible not insisting on a number of lessons.   She did have three lessons last week but this was necessary for her.  She is disadvanted because she does not know Cartagena very well.  One way roads etc, they are not really signposted like Britain.

Apparently the examiner can just ask you to drive to a certain destination and you have to know where it is.

Please let me know how you get on in your test.

Denise

Hi Denise,

Thankyou for your reply, and good luck to your daughter. I think this taking of a new driving test is draconian at worst and ill thought out at best.

Yes, I'm lucky that I can at least drive to Orihuela, 25 mins, and practice.

If Spain wants to apply some sort of test for people not already with knowledge of driving in Spain then by all means introduced for example, a few days in a classroom covering road theory with a simple test. Explaining things like driving on roundabouts for example .

Apparently there is an announcement being made at the end of July according to the embassy in Alicante but don't hold your breath.

For me and I imagine lots of others, this little matter of passing driving tests is quite literally becoming a huge, expensive and stressful problem for Brits wanting to move to Spain.

My NLV is due for renewal towards the end of the year, and the way goings are going I won't be renewing it, as its becoming increasingly obvious the Spanish don't want us here.

The amount of hoops you have to go through to get the visa you'd think having a British licence would be easy to exchange. Seems they are making it as hard as possible for British people to move here.

Hi

I have to agree they are making it extremely difficult.  The hoops you have to jump through are enormous and all at a cost.  I am only a holiday owner but my family moved here so have seen first hand all the problems.

Denise

Reversing back to non resident is an option for me too or sell. The government doesn't care about individuals, it's all about the property churn rate on the Costas, it's a nice little number for many. This is fair enough, it is a lucrative business like enterprise.

I'm hoping that the driving licence fiasco will be rescinded.
