Thanks for these comments, find them very useful. My laptop (Sony Vaio) is about 7 years old, so I don't think upgrade works. As Microsoft recommends I probably need a new laptop with latest specs.

When I say Microsoft support, I mean their automatic updates. I fear that my data would be at risk after January 14 if I keep W7.

If it's your data you're concerned about, do a regular backup, either to the cloud or an external hard drive. An external drive costs about €40 for 1 TB.

I've got two external HDDs, and alternate between them on a weekly basis, doing backups of both my system and data partitions.

Hello,

I, too, got a request to switch to Win 10. I currently use Win 7.  I am not going to accept their offer.  I am somewhat of a dinosaur and firmly believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I have another very elderly machine still working quite happily on XP. Hasn't been updated even when updates were available. Even this computer is old in computer terms but so long as it does what I need I am not messing with it.

I have got good virus/malware protection installed (Malwarebytes) and always use a VPN so 'they' don't know where I am.  I am also using NordVPN.  No problems there either and back-up service is first class with both.

I did not follow the advice of Microsoft on buying a new computer, however I upgraded my computer (to 8 GB RAM, 240 GB SSD) and installed W10. It is much faster and has added features which W7 did not have. And I don't have to worry about updates after January.

I bit the bullet 12 months ago and installed Linux Mint 19.2 Tina. Best thing I EVER did. I have a 500 gb solid state C Drive and a 2 TB hard drive. I kept getting warnings that the HD's were approaching capacity and I needed to bin files to make the computer responsive. I had an old laptop and installed Linux Mint on it to make sure I was OK with it. In less than a month I installed Linux on my desktop. There was 1.4 TB of windows backups clogging up my drives. Linux Timeshots take up less than 100 GB. I now have 1.4 TB free on my hard drive and 220 gig free on my SSD. ALL of my software is FREE and LEGAL and whatever I did on my windows machine, I can do on Linux. Make a list of just what you ACTUALLY do on the computer, not what you THINK you do, and ask yourself "Do I NEED Windows?". I do the usual, surf the net (Using Opera with a free built in VPN) or I could use Firefox or Chrome. I use Libre Office which is compatible with MS Office and FREE. My printer works, wireless is faster. and I don't have to restart my PC when it freezes, because it DOESN'T freeze. well, I exaggerate, I've rebooted it twice in 12 months. It's well worth considering. You could keep your old W7 machine and try it out there and get a new W10 to run alongside it, see which you prefer. I don't miss MS one little bit (Oh, and I don't run ANY antivirus as there's no such thing as a Linux Virus, I have to "Authenticate" ANY installation, so if I don't know what it is, it doesn't get installed.

If you're happy with your wife, would you replace her and have to start training a new one? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Just my opinion - the majority of people will disagree with me.

Windows ten is easy to use. I have windows 7 on an old computer and it works perfectly. I'd be very sceptical about that email. I also have windows 98 on another old computer and that still works perfectly. Don't use it much anymore a bit slow.

You can upgrade to ten,it's a very good system it depends on what you want it for. I'd still check if that email is legit.

Jim, wife is not a dog to train. Besides some people get bored with one wife.
