Thanks, know the con, but did not know the expression……

They are called "Pea" men because they use a dried Pea in their trick to scam people.

I still cannot understand how people get taken in by these scammers.....

The Pea men are usually surrounded by people (who are all involved in the scam) who shout loudly when  they "win" enticing others to have a go.

I've seen many holidaymakers loose hundreds of euros thinking that they could beat the Pea men, it won't happen....

Keep clear and keep walking is my advice, the Pea men make a very good living out of this scam and while holidaymakers are having a good look they are also likely to get their pockets picked too....

Shannon2020.

or the potato and pea game – also known as the shell game, (as Tebo53 describes):

thimberlig (shellfish) or 'trileros' in Spanish.

My partner´s (7yrs nieta) grandaughter has "got it" to perfection but is looking for other future occupations?

I take it there is crime or criminals where you live in the UK at the moment.

Crime and burglaries happen in every town in every country in the world. It would be nice to live in a crime free area but that area doesnt exist. What you have to do is take precautions and become as secure as possible. Torrevieja is as safe as anywhere else on the Costa,s. Dont let the criminal...

...s win.

Good luck in your search.

Crime free does, as near as dammit, exist in a place called Singapore

Oman is quite good too. I visited a couple of forts, there was an old guy in a kiosk who took a Rial for the ticket and then you could go all over the places, no guards, no cctv fully furnished and full of interesting things. I worked in Oman for 2 years and most of the crimes were committed by Asian workers, there were a few notable exceptions. I travelled all over the N. half and Masirah. The last time was about 9 years ago.

Today, Who knows?

The Guys with the playing cards are the best, A friend from Palermo was really good, he learnt as a kid. He actually has a furniture business, but he is still fantastic fun at parties etc. No-One Wins except him, pure fluke can win but the odds!!
