Hello Anne, I’m sorry you’ve found it a bit isolating there at present. Go with your gut feeling hon. If you think your quality of life would be better in Spain then listen to your gut & go for it. i’de advise renting first though. Personally I feel a lot will change price wise in next 12 months .. Do you really need to own yet?

I’m also looking to move to coast though I have lived in Spain for last 7 years , also working as Private Carer in UK for last 3years month on month off , which isn’t so easy to do right due to travel restrictions right now! So looking to find a private Carer position in Spain in New Year.

I wish you luck, & strength. If you want to chat pm me & we’ll chat on wassap if you like.. happy to share what I know as a permanent resident of 7 years.

I bought a place in La Marina Urbanisation. I have met more friendly English people and even more friendly German and Swedish people, along with Spanish, then I have met for years in South London where people don't even like to say hello, that's just in my first three months.

Hi

I totally agree we also bought our vila in La Marins Urb 5 years ago

Like you I also lived in SW London for 5 years before moving to La Marina

And I can say hand in my heart it was the best ever decision I made moving over here

I am actually originally from Iran but had lived in UK for over 45 years , but during those times even though I always worked and paid my taxes, I never felt I was at home I had a house there but never a home

My neighbors in SW London never ever said hi to me during 5 years I lived there

Here people are so friendly so honest and I have never felt more at ho

Hi  Terry.

Hope  you are getting along with life in these difficult times. A  few questions  about  life in  Spain  in  Winter months

How  do  you  heat  apartment   in  Winter  months,  How  do  you   past  the  time  as well,  I  would  like to  get  involved with  a  Chairtty if English  spoken.  I  would  take up  Spanish  lessons.  Do   you live  in  Apartments  ,  I  would  like   to  live  in  a  Bungalow  as  would  not  be keen  on  noise  in  Apartments   overhead.  What  type  of  area  you  live  in. Are  you  far  from  Coast.

Hope you  could answer   my  queries

     Phil

Hello Anne,

I emigrated to Torrevieja 3 months before my 61st birthday.  I was on my own and only really knew person who lived there.  That was 3 1/2 years ago and I am so happy that I made the move.

Torrevieja is very cosmopolitan.  There are a lot of British ex-pats, plus Scandinavians, Germans, Russians and many more nationalities, plus of course Spanish.  Before I emigrated, I could not speak any Spanish so I took 2 x 10 week adult courses.  Since then, I use the Duolingo app which I find very useful.  Now, I am nowhere near fluent but the Spanish I have learnt definitely helps.  That said, you can get by without Spanish but I would recommend learning the very basics - the Spanish appreciate you making the effort and I have found them very friendly.

You have more money behind you than I had/have but of course you will need to, due to Brexit.  Please seek proper advice regarding the exact requirements.  I have not bought a property but chosen to rent.  I pay €450 per month for a 2 bed appartment which includes internet.  Electricty, gas and water is extra. This is my 5th rental in 3 years - sometimes you are at the mercy of the landlord who does not extend the rental agreement for various reasons.  Conversely, if you are not happy with the area/property, you have the ability to move.

I started out in a frontline apartment - it had fabulous views over the beach/sea but I found it very cold and draughty in the winter months - it is cooler by the sea.  The area I am in now is within a 30 minute walk to town, 20 to the beach and large shops and 10 to the local Lidl.  Torrevieja also has a citizens card (initial cost €7) which gives you free travel on the local buses.  It doen't depend on age, just that you are registered on the Padron (like the electoral register.

In conclusion, I love this place.  I have made lots of friends and there are plenty of places to eat, drink and entertainment and it has one of the best climates in the world. Plus it is a very reasonably priced place to live.  Do your homework and the very best of luck.  If you make it out to Torrevieja, feel free to get in touch.
