Beggars belief.

With regard the petition , it will need 100,000 signatures before it can be discussed in Parliament . I  think it is more effective for stories to be raised in the tabloids which will put pressure on the Spanish ministers to change these terrible laws.

If you’re on Twitter Keith post the concerns & link the Ministry or Minister in question in it.

I'm not on twitter , but maybe it's worth a go .

Don't know if anyone heard this story before- scary stuff even for permanent residents in Spain (I've probably posted it before).

I've just registered on Twitter and already started my tweet replies to 'Pedro Sanchez' and 'Ministry of Interior'

 Pedro Sánchez (@sanchezcastejon) / Twitter

Ministerio del Interior (@interiorgob) / Twitter

Maybe we should all start inundating him with Tweet replies about squatting , whatever his 'Twitter'  subject is about.

My petition:

Demand Spain Evict Squatters Within 24 hours Of Police Being Notified

Contact the Spanish PM and Minister Of Home Affairs demanding they amend their current laws regarding squatters. Their laws are biased towards squatters taking ownership of peoples properties and belongings leaving owners homeless and bereft of all their personal possessions sometimes for years.

Demand that the Spanish Police take immediate action when squatters are reported in an owners property. Evict them immediately if they have no written permission signed by the owner. Allow owners the option of cutting off all utilities rather than legally forcing them to pay for all the squatters usage. Currently Police will do nothing unless squatters are caught 'red-handed' . Eviction then has to go through the Spanish Court System which can sometimes take 1-4 years.

Karen

I noticed on another forum what a poster said about dealing with his situation where his house was actually up for sale when squatters moved in.

"On Police advice, since the squatters weren't actually in the property, we broke in and changed the locks from the ones they had put in. The property was then reoccupied by us, and fortunately, the sale that had been agreed went through a few days later without problem."

I've messaged the poster asking him if this was a legal action (I doubt it ).

Hi Keith

This is the avenue a lot more people that have their own home taken over by those scum squatters should be taking...

1-work out their routine (this will take time and effort but your own home is worth it)

2-when they are out 'came entry' back into your own home

3-change the locks on your own doors

4-dump the scums stuff out in the street

5-be prepared to camp out in your own home so they move on to somewhere else

6-fit an armoured door, alarm etc to your own home to put off other scum squatters

7-pray the spanish authorities finally see sense and change the laws on the subject...lol thought I would end on a wee joke

Hi Del

I'd love to be able to do what you've posted but I've heard that squatters phone up the local police themselves and claim ownership rights . Therefore the police know that you've illegally broken back in and therefore can be prosecuted for 'Trespass'  in your own property. How insane is that?

I've used the same ploy as the squatters and contacted the police 5  times since Jan'21  (after we evicted our tenant through the courts)  informing them that we would not be renting the place , it would be empty and that the only set of keys were with our lawyer in Alicante , that if anyone is found in our property that they would have entered illegally (ie. Trespass or breaking and entering).

They never even bothered to have the decency to confirm receipt of my emails.

I would love to, but there may now be two in the house, which means they could take turns when leaving.   It would take time to camp out and watch the property.  Sadly, I have to work full time in the UK - but it may still come to it.   I have heard that the as the police recognise the squatters' rights and will side with him/them until such time as I obtain a Court eviction notice.  Any interference with the squatter until then is deemed to be intimidation and I could be prosecuted for this.  :(
