NIE online appointments system - 4 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in General Mudamiento discussion on Mon Jun 1, 2020 3:31pm

The online system is now working again:

https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html

I was offered a choice of Alicante & Alcoy, and could have made an appointment for an NIE at Alicante on June 5th - i.e. this week.

This means the offices are now taking applications, so if it would be more convenient to go to, say, Orihuela or Playa Flamenca, then I suggest you call in and ask them.

Next up - residency appointments???

DGT re-opening once phase 2 starts - 0 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in Driving, hiring, buying and owning a car in Mudamiento on Thu May 21, 2020 4:26pm

The title says it all really, and I haven't yet got the full facts, but it seems that once phase 2 starts, then it will be possible to go to DGT - with an appointment - to carry out any necessary face-to-face procedures, like transferring to a Spanish license, transferring car ownership, etc.

With that being the case, then I'd expect the medical test centres to also open in phase 2, if they aren't yet open.

I've taken this from Orden SND / 413/2020. To see the full monte, look at:

https://www.boe.es/buscar/act.php?id=BOE-A-2020-5081

Extension of the extension of the validity of the certificate of periodic technical inspection of vehicles.

The period of validity of the certificates of periodic technical inspection of vehicles whose next inspection date is included in the period of validity of the state of alarm, provided in the first section of Order SND / 325/2020, of April 6 , which establishes interpretive criteria and extends the validity of the certificates of verifications and preventive maintenance established in the regulation of industrial and metrological safety, is extended by fifteen calendar days for each week elapsed from the start of the state of alarm until the certificate would have expired, in accordance with the provisions of the following table:

Unfortunately the forum doesn't support tables, so see the image.

Jim's woodwork - 68 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in Off topic on Fri May 15, 2020 3:56pm

As a bit of light relief, I decided to post some pictures of my more recent attempts at wood work.

I'll post them individually so I can add comments in case anyone is interested.

And before anyone starts carping that this has nothing to do with Spain, it is in the off-topic forum, and I used Spanish materials for them.

The first is just a decorative basket. You just take a piece of wood and cut decreasing rings in it, to whatever pattern you choose to use.

You'll have to click on the images to view them in their entirety.

Menthol cigarettes - 12 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in General Mudamiento discussion on Fri May 1, 2020 5:22pm

I freely admit that I smoke, I drink, and I eat too much - all disgusting habits I have to concede.

If there are any smokers of menthol cigarettes on the forum, be aware that these are going to be banned as from May 20th.

If anyone wants proof, I can quote both EU and Spanish law.

As a consequence, I'm going to have to make an 'essential' journey to the tabac!

DGT FAQs re driving during the state of alarm - 4 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in Driving, hiring, buying and owning a car in Mudamiento on Mon Apr 20, 2020 5:06am

In order to try and reduce the number of repeat posts about what you can and can't do, I've cobbled together some pertinent answers from DGT's website:

Spanish licenses:

Driving licenses whose validity period expires during the alarm state will be automatically extended for the duration of the alarm and until sixty days after its end.

Foreign drivers/cars:

You can continue driving in the same conditions as before the alarm situation was declared.

In addition, the time that the alarm situation lasts does not count for the six-month period in which you can drive in Spain with your foreign permit. In this way, the calculation of the six-month period is halted and will be resumed as soon as the state of alarm is over.

ITV:

If your vehicle's ITV has expired during the alarm state period, it will be considered extended up to 30 calendar days after the last alarm state ends.

Also remember that ITV centres will be closed for the duration of the alarm state.

30 days??? The ITV stations are going to be snowed under when they reopen!

Vehicle repairs:

The opening of motor vehicle repair and maintenance workshops is permitted, as well as complementary activities for vehicles authorized to circulate.

Number of people in a car:

The private public transport of people in vehicles of up to nine seats, including the driver, in which more than one person must travel in the vehicle, will respect that there is a maximum of one person for each row of seats, maintaining the greatest possible distance between occupants

When you can drive:

In general, it is prohibited to circulate on public roads during the period of the alarm state. You can only circulate if it is to carry out any of the following activities:

1.- Acquisition of food, pharmaceuticals and basic necessities.

2.- Assistance to health centers, services and establishments.

3.- Travel to the workplace to carry out their labor, professional or business provision.

4.- Return to the place of habitual residence.

5.- Assistance and care for the elderly, minors, dependents, people with disabilities or especially vulnerable people.

6.- Displacement to financial and insurance entities.

7.- Due to force majeure or need.

Any other activity of a similar nature that must be done individually, unless accompanied by people with disabilities or for other justified cause.

Statistics for Spain - 3 replies

For easy to read graphs of total and daily figures, look at:

It doesn't state mortality figures.

I haven't cross-checked any of the figures to those officially published, but the website is one I've always found very useful.

Hopes for a potential vaccine - 3 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in Coronavirus discussion in Mudamiento: Covid-19 news and updates on Sat Apr 4, 2020 10:00am

From BBC Science Focus magazine:

Fingertip-sized coronavirus vaccine ‘ready in months’

Thought to be the first COVID-19 vaccine to be peer-reviewed by other scientists.

Research develop a fingertip-sized patch of 400 tiny needles that deliver vaccine into the skin, where the immune reaction is strongest.

The new vaccine can be mass produced and can sit at room temperature until needed, eliminating the need for refrigeration during transport or storage.

Researchers in the US say they were able to act quickly because they had laid the groundwork during previous epidemics.

A fingertip-sized patch could be a potential vaccine for coronavirus, researchers say.

Scientists suggest that when tested in mice, it produced antibodies specific to COVID-19 [PDF] in quantities thought to be sufficient for neutralising the virus.

The vaccine is described in a paper published in EBioMedicine, which is published by The Lancet, and is thought to be the first to be reviewed by other scientists.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine say they were able to act quickly because they had laid the groundwork during earlier coronavirus epidemics.

Jim's daughter's point of view - 58 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in Coronavirus discussion in Mudamiento: Covid-19 news and updates on Fri Apr 3, 2020 7:53pm

My daughter works for the NHS in Wales, and I thought some of you might be interested in comments she's made in her latest email to me. The following are her direct quotes. Excuse her language, but I think she's justified - Alex can edit this post if he wishes:

Some stores are operating a 1 way system that you have to follow irrespective of what you want, some things are out of stock because some selfish fucking dickheads panic bought stuff.

All elective procedures have been cancelled, all hospital visiting has been stopped, all clinics stopped, we’re trying not to cancel cancer appointments but they are not being done at our DGHs, we’re lucky here as there is a cancer hospital in Cardiff so people have to go there.

Some of our staff have said sod this I’m not coming to work, so we’ve had to start taking a harder line… if you are not needed in your usual role, and do not have a medical condition that requires isolation, then you either come to work to be deployed somewhere that needs help, or you take annual leave, or you take unpaid leave.  But what you can’t do is sit at home with your feet up ignoring the world until this is over.

We are the NHS, we don’t get to decide we’re non-essential and stay at home.

Workload is manic, I’m one of the unlucky ones who needs to get involved in loads of the ‘emergency’ stuff but can’t stop the day job

We are getting through with random wittering about crap, sharing stupid pictures/videos, and a warped sense of humour.

This is a tsunami.  We are at the stage where someone has sounded the alarm, the water has gone out, and we can see the wall getting closer and closer but nothing we do will get us out of the way.

Stay indoors, stay safe, fingers crossed.

We are the NHS, we are here.  One day at a time.

World Health Organisation Q & A - 8 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in Coronavirus discussion in Mudamiento: Covid-19 news and updates on Fri Mar 27, 2020 10:35am

I received from a friend a message about Covid-19, purporting to be advice given to health personnel. On first reading it seems quite convincing, but makes a number of supposedly factual statements, e.g. about the short length of time the virus survives on hard surfaces, the size of the virus, and that face masks are effective.

On checking it out, this message seems to have gone viral, but most of the statements it makes are unsupported by the science.

For anyone who wants to learn more about the virus, please discount such messages, and look at data from a reputable source, see:
