Coffee in Rafal? - 12 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in Find friends in Mudamiento on Tue Aug 4, 2020 2:46pm

As far as I can establish, I'm the only member of this forum who lives in Mudamiento, and there aren't any members who live in Rafal.

However, if anyone in this area would like to say hello, I'll be in the Doky bar in Rafal on Thursday from about 11.30 to 13.30.

The Doky

I'd intended to get a picture of both Ray & I wearing our TIEs, but afraid I forgot.

I've always received a lot of PMs, which I've always tried to respond to, but lately the number has reached the point where I can no longer respond to them all.

Yesterday alone I received 24 PMs.

Some were from friends, and are welcome.

Every one of the balance was from people asking for advice about topics that are already well covered on the forum.

I'd make a few points:

As well as spending a lot of time trying to sort out Margaret's estate, I have a lot of jobs to do on the house. For that reason, I have to limit the amount of time I spend on forum matters.

Asking a question to me alone means that the person asking doesn't get input from other members who would be equally helpful if the question was asked on the forum.

In the time spent answering PMs, I could update existing guides or create new ones - which would hopefully be helpful to a wider audience.

For the above reasons, for anyone who sends me a PM about a topic I think could be asked on the forum, I'm simply going to answer with a link to this post. I'm not trying to offend anyone - I just want more control over my own time.

Kindle books for ladies - 11 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in Off topic on Sun Jul 12, 2020 5:15pm

Margaret read quite a lot, and had a large collection of books. Many of these are light-hearted stuff, but there is quite a lot of non-fiction - like the Peter Mayle Provence books, Yorkshire Shepardess, etc. There is a total of 952 books.

I've uploaded a folder with the full collection to Google Drive. The size of the folder is 1 GB, so it will take some time to download if you want the lot. The download link is:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1R6pLDlN-S8MTFeltIr4i5dVZL2ihcUpc?usp=sharing

If you go to that link, you'll see a folder for every author. If you hover on a folder, you'll see a download icon appear. If you click that, Drive zips the file and enables you to download it. Once downloaded, just right-click on it and tell it to extract.

If you do download the books and find them useful, please consider a donation in Margaret's name.

The download link won't be live indefinitely, as I'll need the space for something else in the near future.

Where to buy a lime tree - 10 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in Gardening, plants, insects and pests in Mudamiento on Tue Jul 7, 2020 4:27pm

If anyone in the southern Costa Blanca - preferable in the Torrevieja or San Miguel area - knows a jardinería or vivero that sells lime trees, I'd be grateful if you'd let me know.

TIA.

Sad news - Jim's wife - 173 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in General Mudamiento discussion on Fri Jul 3, 2020 7:20pm

Although very few forum members met her, I regret to say that, after fighting cancer for three years, my wife Margaret passed away on Tuesday.

Although she had donated her body to science, in the hope of helping the next generation of doctors and surgeons, the ministry of health had issued a directive that, due to the virus, bodies were not to be accepted. The result was that she was cremated on Thursday.

Her daughter came out from Scotland before her death, and we were both at the hospital when Margaret passed away. I suppose it's fortunate in some ways that Margaret didn't suffer too long, and that two days before her death she was still talking about when she would be able to come home.

Her daughter has been a massive help to me, and without her support I'm sure I would have cracked up completely.

I will get soon get back into the forum, and hope that those who have expected replies from me will understand why I haven't participated.

Elche General University Hospital - Wi-Fi - 2 replies

jimtaylor Posted by jimtaylor in General Mudamiento discussion on Thu Jun 18, 2020 8:15pm

Like several other hospitals, Elche General have free Wi-Fi available to patients in the hospital, which by extension means that this is also available to those visiting hospital patients.

As a patient, you can obviously just ask one of the staff if they would make the connection for you, but hopefully this post will mean you don't need to ask and can do it yourself.

Whatever version of Android or iOS you are running, you just need to go into Settings and navigate to the Wi-Fi section.

Your mobile will scan for available networks and will find several, but you need to tap on WI-FI-SANITAT.

You then need to enter the key (password - clave) for that network, and this is:

wsanitat

That will connect you to the Wi-Fi network, but not to the internet.

A screen will appear with a lot of informative information, and you need to scroll down to the end of that. There is a very small and innocuous box by 'He leido...'. You need to click on that box to put a tick in it, then click on 'Aceptar'.

That then connects you to the internet, and away you go.

The only problem I have found is that, if you don't continue to use the internet and allow your mobile to go to sleep, then every time you wake it up you will have to redo the 'He leido...' and 'Aceptar' stages.

In spite of this minor annoyance, it's a great way of being able to use the web, and to keep in touch of people without incurring any cost.

If anyone has experience of free Wi-Fi at other hospitals, then please post details similar to the above so that patients and their visitors can have the benefit of that knowledge.

Living Off Savings Until Pensions Due - 4 replies

goldeneagle69 Posted by goldeneagle69 in Taxes in Mudamiento: Suma, NIE and general tax advice on Tue Jun 16, 2020 9:11pm

My wife and I are looking to move to Spain permanently in the next couple of years.  Our plan is to sell our house in the UK, buy one in Spain and live off some of the UK profits until our pensions pay out 4-5 years later.  I have managed to work out everything to the nth degree and I'm more than happy that money won't be a problem.  We plan on becoming residents as soon as we possibly can (Brexit dependent), and if things go wrong we will have enough money to buy a smaller property back in the UK.

My question is based on what tax we will pay on these profits and where we should save the money (UK or Spain)?  With interest rates as they are at the moment, the money won't generate a large amount of interest, and as far as I can see this will be the only income.  Is that correct, or are the savings classed as income too?  If the money was left in a UK account I don't believe that I would pay any tax on it.  Is this the same if I put it into a Spanish bank account?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Iain.
