There was always an Auxiliar available if one was needed, and they came and professionally washed and turned her, which I am not trained to do. The medical care was excellent on both occasions, although on the second stay, there were noticeably less staff available for routine tasks and replies to the intercom were less rapid. The food was acceptable, although not brilliant, but suitable for elderly patient with swallowing problems and physically weak.

Thanks so much. Very helpful.

Non-medical care is expected to be carried out by family members.   My late husband had several stays in 2 bedded rooms sharing one toilet/shower room.   Food was diabolical - no salt used.   He was usually in the Vega Baja Hospital in San Bartolome.

Thank you. Good to be forewarned.

That would depend on the hospital. I was all prepared to do the things you would expect a nurse auxiliary to do in UK such as cleaning up, feeding and so on. However, my wife was rather sick one evening and I was preparing to clean up and so on but one of the lady cleaners sort of pushed me out of the way and did it all including changing the bed linen.

Other things I was warned about were carried out by the staff at Torrevieja and I was not expected to do anything.

The bit about the food rings true, though. Early morning was just a very weak coffee (no milk) hence the provision of a flask of tea) and a quite hard bread roll. Mid morning was the same unmilked weak coffee and an ensaimada. Lunch when she was on solids normally a boiled potato and a piece of unidentified bony fish. Dinner was late at 9pm and pretty greasy fish stew with no condiments and yet another quite hard brad roll.

Luckily Torrevieja hospital has a very good cafeteria on the floor below where I could purchase something a lot better. Tortillas, magra, nice fresh bocadillos (they must have given all the unsold stale ones to the hospital caterers). Even a doctor who came in to check on her looked at the provided food and simply said "rubbish". Treat of the week was baked potato (with nothing on it). One of the cleaning ladies took pity on my wife and brought her in a lovely, home made pork stew with noodles.

The pull out bed so I could stay overnight was excellent. I also took her in her PC with Amazon Prime on it so she could watch something. As the OP is only going to be in overnight that probably won't be a problem. (rooms have a TV but Spanish channels only and one I couldn't fathom out how to alter the language).

I had a stay in Elda hospital a few years ago.  Everything people have said corresponds with my experiences.

There is absolutely NO peace and quiet. TVs are on from early on with inane game shows all day. Food was mainly some form of bird soup, clear and tasteless.  Your relatives must be prepared to feed you, that's what the Spanish do and relatives stay in the hospital day and night.

Dominoes Pizza used to make regular deliveries to the ward!!

Having said all that the medical attention was good and did the required job but somewhat sparse.

Thanks for all the info. Very helpful. Its actually my partner who's going to be in hospital but not sure I'm going to show him your reply, just in case it raises his expectations a tad too high on what he thinks I could do for him 😉

Blimey! Hadn't even thought of the noise but fingers crossed its not too bad and better to be prepared - earphones/plugs now on the list. Thank you.

Yes, they do. There is a pull out bed and you have to tell the staff you will be staying. They log you in and provide the bedding for the pull out.

This was at Torrvieja hospital.
