Hello Colin, have your friends tried Ecofin? We get them from our local hardware store and they are like teabags full of foul smelling powder which you mix with water and put in traps which we hang from trees and fences (a little way from the house) and the flies can't get enough of it. They tend to fill up with dead flies very quickly and have just about solved the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion - they have decided to sell and the property is on the market as anything they tried just wasn't effective (don't know if they tried what you suggest though). We tried sitting out in their garden last October and had to move inside within 5 minutes, it was so bad. Such a shame, as it is a lovely property but their dreams have been shattered by the flies.

Thank you very much to all who replied, very helpful.  Going to spend some time in Almoradi before committing, but sounds like an interesting place.  Looking forward to visiting next month.

we have lived in an apartment in almoradi for 6 yrs, we downsized from a villa as we wanted to be closer to ameneties.we have also got rid of the car as everything we need is within walking distance. its a good town all on the leval and in our experiece no problems with drains or mozzies. i can recommend berna diego as an estate agent. just take care if buying in a large block that there are no squatters.

I bought 2 years ago and although I don't live there all year round i do go at various times of the year. I have not experienced mosquitoes,  flies or smelly drains. In comparison to Greece where i did live for 10 years i would say Almoradi is totally free of all the mentioed.  The only time I've been bitten is when i visited the Moroccan tea house in July. As for the town it certainly isn't for people who want the British way of life but good for others who want mostly Spanish. I do agree with others who say rent and try out the town and other towns before buying.

Hi

We bought an apartment in Almoradí early last year after looking at lots of areas. We wanted to be in a Spanish town and we have not been disappointed. It is a lovely town with lots of events throughout the year, lots of good bars and restaurants which we are enjoying trying out. We have visited every other month and haven’t experienced any problems. However I would advise renting somewhere first and getting to know the area as it is a big commitment and you need to be sure it is what you want from a holiday home!

That’s rubbish! We bought a holiday apartment 18 months ago.  Never had any bad smells.- no problem with drains and street cleaners are out all the time- it’s fantastic. Few mozzies in August but it’s Spain for goodness sake!  Gorgeous community, bars, restaurants and fantastic market We owned an apartment in Lanzarote for 12 years previously and this area is much better. Beautiful location , plenty of places to visit locally too.  😎 😎😎😎

Have an apartment in Almoradi, love the town. I got bitten once last year by a mozzie, got stung here at home twice last year. Mozzie nets are the secret and mozzies dont just live in Almoradi ! Not a buzzing town by any means but that is what we wanted. As for smells, what smell ? Lovely Spanish town, lovely people.

The Mozzie and drain comments are not justified. There's less mozzies in Almoradi than near big bodies of water such as nearby Torrevieja salt lakes, which are known problem areas (and get sprayed).  I've been there countless times and never experienced these things. There's the odd Mozzie about everywhere!

I live in a small village 5 minutes from Almoradi - Las Heredades - lovely little friendly village for 15 years and visit Almoradi often.

For reference, I lived a while in Almeria, much further down the coast for a few months & it is worse down that way for insects - I found there seems to be some pretty aggressive and large 'horse flies', that you want to think twice about swatting, as you could get your hand bitten off ;-)  One of the things that put me off Almeria, that it can be 5 degrees hotter than this end.
