Hi Sandra and welcome to the forum 😀

The requirements for registering as a foreigner in Spain is the EX-18 and this should be done within 90 days of arriving in Spain.  However, as you're planning to live in Spain, I would expect Babelia to suggest you apply immediately for a TIE residency card, which is the EX-20 process. ...

...; The documentation you require is actually the same for both procedures:

- NIE (Spanish ID number)

- Spanish bank account

- Padron

- Property Deeds or long-term Rental contract

- Proof of income (minimum €463 per month,  or €5,543 lump sum) *

- Proof of healthcare cover **

* These are the financial requirements for UK citizens applying as members of the EU.  If your residency application on that basis is rejected, you can still apply as a TCN (Third Country National), which we become from 1 January 2021, but the financial requirements are much higher: €2,100 per month, or €26,000 lump sum.

**  As a Spanish resident, you'll no longer be entitled to NHS healthcare in the UK, except for emergency treatment when making short-term visits there.  Is your employer paying for you to have private healthcare in Spain?

As you say you'll continue to be employed by a company in the UK, have you checked where your income tax liability will be?  If you continue to bepaid and taxed in the UK, whilst resident in Spain, you will still need to make tax declarations in Spain.  There's a Dual Taxation Agreement between the UK and Spain (not affected by Brexit), so you shouldn't pay tax on the same income in both countries, but hopefully your employer will know what is required to ensure you don't fall foul of the Spanish taxman.

You don't mention having your NIE, but if I remember correctly, you can't open a bank account without one?  Other than that, it sounds like you're on the case on everything else, except healthcare?

There's been some great feedback about Babelia by other forum members, so I think you're in good hands.

Good luck!

Kim

WOW Thank you Kimmy

That certainly covers everything and certainly positive. Financials are covered whichever one. And my employer pays private healthcare in the UK and I am paying the one here.
I have already emailed my employer regarding the tax situation and am awaiting a reply.

The only downside/negative is it seems I cannot go any further forward without my Padron and the appointment I have is not until the 5th April...!!!!!!

Any suggestions other than I will check daily for a cancellation???

Thank you so much

Sandra

Hi Sandra,

Unfortunately, as a first-time applicant for the Padron, you have to apply in person and, because of Covid-19 restrictions, this can only be done by appointment.  I'm afraid you're right, your only option at the moment is to keep checking for cancellations.

Kind regards,

Kim

An alternative option in respect of applying to get on the padron in person at the town hall is to apply for a digital certificate which then enables you to apply for the padron online (in certain areas). It is not necessarily a requirement to attend the town hall to get on the padron if you have previously managed to get a digital certificate. You do need to attend the town hall to get the certificate but see my final 2 paragraphs.

This is the case in Orihuela Costa but I am not sure whether the same would apply in respect of where you are in the Northern Costa Blanca.

The reason I mention this is that appointments to get a digital certificate were much more available than appointments to register on the padron which I suspect was because of the number of requests that town halls were getting in respect of the padron as a consequence of Brexit.

The digitial certificate appointment takes <10 minutes in my experience and once you've installed the certificate you can apply for the padron (and residency) from the comfort of your living room.

Hi George,

That's interesting, I thought only renewals could be done with an electronic certificate, but definitely worth Sandra checking with her own Town Hall 👍

Kind regards,

Kim

As I understand it, it varies by town hall (I have no idea why but that's bureaucracy in any country for you).

You can certainly apply online in Orihuela Costa to initially register on the padron (you need to load all your documents through Autofirma to validate them) but also I believe the same applies in Torreveija. I do not know about the northern Costa Blanca town halls.

Hello George

Thank you for that. I will contact them first thing to enquire. Got to be worth a try.

I have resigned to having to also fulfill any new conditions, which is no problem  I am just keen to get things moving.

Thank you Sandra

I know this is probably a crazy idea, but do you think Covid-19 has forced a level of pragmatism in Spanish authorities??  😉

In our Town Hall, the people that issue padrons and electronic certificates sit next to each other, and you're meant to book separate appointments with each, but while we were there for our electronic certificates in September, I asked the chap who does the Padrons if he could give us updated ones and he did it straight away.  Might be worth Sandra trying that as well..... 🤔

Kind regards,

Kim

Yes, am fairly sure they sit next to each other in Orihuela Costa.

It woudn't surprise me if the same person would deal with an electronic certificate application at 10am and then at 10.20am be dealing with a padron application.

If you're Spanish is good enough, then I think you could well get away with combining an electronic certificate appt with a padron one too having just booked the ACCV appt - it's not like the requirements in terms of ID etc are materially different and if like most of us you have a "Spanish dossier" just take that with you as it'll probably have whatever they want!

Sounds like a great idea. No harm in asking 😊

Thank you Sandra
