That is usually one of the jobs that a nurse does here.   If the doctor thinks that your b.p. requires to be done regularly then he will tell you to arrange to make appointments with the nurse.

Yes just ask. It’s a case of managing your health yourself and when you need something you ask. Great system.

I suppose it depends why you go to the doctor.

Probably ,because if they did those tasks ,they wouldn't be dealing with patients who need acute attention !

A few years ago my husband caught an intestinal bug and was unwell for over a week. Finally, we went to Guardamar health centre. The doctor spoke little or no English but he did all the routine physical tests that doctors did 50 years ago including tapping below the knees. I was impressed. Diagnosed and given a prescription. Better with a few days. Excellent medical attention.

Ps blood pressure taken too.  By the way, your local pharmacy provides free blood pressure testing and are so efficient. Please bring your partner to have his checked.

Having worked on the NHS BP at Home project in the UK and understanding how important checking your BP is. I purchased my own BP machine and use that monthly, just to keep an eye on things as I have no BP issues. I also got my family to do the same. Patients in the project were either provided with a machine or bought their own. They then monitored their blood pressure over a period of time and reported the findings to the GP. I would recommend everyone to do the same or use the pharmacy services. If your readings are concerning (advice on levels in the leaflet with the machine) then see your GP. The NHS project saved lives as high BP is serious and you don't always have symptoms. It's just another way of being responsible for our health particularly with health services being overloaded.

I beg to differ. When I registered with a doctor in San Miguel as was given a New Patient check which included blood test, blood pressure, chest X-ray and ecg, and the provided with an annual prescription for the meds I was already on.

I have been taking blood pressure meds for 20+ years & the dosage has been increased in the past 12 months prior to moving to Spain, so home monitoring is a pro-active approach from my perspective.

Diane2805 would you be able to recommend a BP monitor for personal use and/or advise on where I might purchase one please? Are they available from the chemists?

If you are buying a home monitor make sure that you buy an upper arm model rather than a wrist model. When using, make sure you are sitting with your back supported, legs out to the front and not crossed, arm rested on arm rest and cuff half way between elbow and shoulder (ideally, level with heart). Do not talk or move around or otherwise interfere with taking the measurement. Most of the modern machines are capable but rather than depending on the actual reading, use the machine to see if your pressure is going up, down or remaining the same. Bring it along to the doctor and you can compare accuracy.

Hello Adie

I took my BP this morning for an appt tomorrow morning at the salud.  That has jusat been cancelled by the salud as my Dr is ill!

I bought my BP machine from Amazon & it was the most recommended ..... made by Kinetik medical & approved by the BHS ( standard cuff size 22-30cm - upper arm)

Cheers
