We will be moving to Denia this summer. Which Car Dealers would you recommend and what garages to service and look after the car.  Is there an MOT check yearly, and if we are Resident is there any further Tax to pay.  Any advice would be most helpful.  Thanks Tom.

The main road into Denia, coming from the N332 is bordered on both sides by car dealerships of virtually every make and marque. There are also second hand dealerships and of course most specific dealers will have used cars. Buying second hand in Spain is expensive as the prices remain high as the Spanish in general do not change their vehicles regularly as in UK and there are relatively few fleets selling off vehicles into the market.

Buying new is generally better value here, if you can. Most very ‘cheap’ second hand cars are likely to be either very old or otherwise trouble! We bought a small second hand car, as we live in the campo and two vehicles are essential here; the price was roughly twice what we would have expected to pay in UK for the same thing. However, we bought it from a reputable dealer, who handled all the paperwork for us.

Buying a second hand car here is not as simple as in UK, and if doing a ‘private’ deal, you do need to ascertain who exactly is going to pay for the charge made by the police for re-registering the vehicle - some 300 eu - and that there are no outstanding debts etc, it can be fraught and better to use a professional dealer who will lay out the charges clearly and may well include them in the purchase price.

ITV ((MOT) is due at 4 years old and then annually. The equivalent of the Road Fund Tax is raised by your local Ajuntamiento (Town Hall) and the charge varies depending upon which authority it is - for example, our local village Ajuntamiento charges all of 37 eu annually, but it’s a small village inland. There are ITV centres within reach of almost everywhere and certainly will be in Denia.

Most ‘official’ charges such as this, and rates, rubbish collection and so forth are collected usually by an independent organisation called SUMA, which has offices in most towns, on behalf of the authorities. You can set up direct debits with them and they will email all bills etc to you; especially useful in areas such as ours where authorities will not deliver to PO Boxes and we have absolutely no postal delivery to the house!

Hope this info is of some basic help

A really comprehensive reply! On the ITV, the first one is due at 4 years but I thought they were then every two years until the car is 10 years old and then they become annual. The ITV station for Denia is in Ondara. I recently imported my UK car using an excellent gestor who arranged the test and met me there with the paperwork and dealt with the office. He arranged all payments and issue of Spanish plates etc. It´s worth considering importation but allow for changing headlights and gestor fees. Otherwise painless.
