Hi all,

When we move to Spain, we are thinking about bringing our UK car with us. How easy is it to register our car in Spain etc? What costs might we be looking at?

I’ve searched the site, and looked at Jim’s very helpful guides, but I couldn’t spot anything about this...

Thanks!

Hi,

I imported my Ford Focus Estate in January 2020. I used a gestor in Denia who did all the paperwork. He booked the ITV inspection etc  and paid all the taxes and fees along the way. He got the Spanish documents and new number plates. All I had to do was put the plates on the car. It cost €750 in total. Expensive but stress free.

The import taxes depend on the age/value/pollution rating of your car, so there is no easy answer on cost. Then there are the headlights to change (probably), and the matriculation/ITV costs.

I understand that some of the taxes can be avoided (legally) if you re-register the car within a month or two of your padron date.

Our Honda Accord totalled around 900 Euros.

We used a local garage to manage the process for us. Others on this forum have recommended http://www.spanish-number-plates.com/

That’s great, thanks! We have a Mazda MX-5 which is approximately five years old, so I’m not sure if that means more taxes as it’s a sports car or not! Very good to know there are people we can contact who will help sort the process for us.

Ooops! I forgot to mention changing the headlights which cost me about €700. You may get it done cheaper in the U.K before you set off and saves messing about with the headlight adaptor stickers. By the way, I still have the old headlights if anyone has a use for them.

Those Mazdas are all over the world.

For headlights try ebay.com (the USA site). There is a good chance that a Chinese company will send you brand new LHD headlights cheaply.

I have a Honda Accord. I obtained brand new LHD headlights (pattern parts) from China - via ebay.com - delivered to the UK for around £80 the pair.
