That depends on many things. Age, any previous or ongoing health problems and so on. The health insurance must give the equivalent of the treatment available on the Spanish NHS and be a company recognised as operating in Spain.

Prices can vary between 38 and 50 euro a month with the average family health insurance (couple under 50 with two children) around 130 euro a month but, depending on medical history, up to around 480 euro a month for a family.

Also make sure you look around. I was reading an article that stated the difference between companies offering this can vary but up to 50%.

I am male aged 64 with no pre existing conditions and pay 100 euros a month, my health insurance company is Generali, l have been with them now since 2020 and never had any reason to use them, l will stay with them until l reach uk 🇬🇧 state retirement age at 66 and then with my entitled s1 change over to the Spanish health system, then l should receive free health coverage. All ways read the small print and ask questions before deciding who you choose. Good luck.

Hi Annie,

In addition to the advice already given, for an NLV application, the private health insurance you buy cannot include "co-payments", i.e. what we would call "excess".

Kind regards,

Kim
