Hi Rudi

I'd be interested to hear where you are in Torrevieja? For example, Rocio del Mar is part of Torrevieja and everybody speaks English, but in central Torrevieja I hear far more Spanish.

I don't know if Denia has similar different areas.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

We're actually in the town. Close to Parque de las Naciones. You're right, there is plenty of Spanish spoken in the town. It's a working town and busy all year round. But in restaurants and bars, I have found that, a lot of the time, probably due to the amount of non Spanish around, they speak English to you and even answer you in English if you speak Spanish.  You also hear a huge amount of English spoken around you. Sometimes it's as if you weren't in Spain at all.  I  completely understand how lots of people would actually prefer this. It's just that we prefer a more Spanish atmosphere. Denia seems to offer that.

Hi William. We really fell in love with Denia when we visited last summer.  Torrevieja is lovely and is getting better every year. They are reinvesting a lot of the tourist income in the town and it's clear to see. But we loved how Spanish Denia is. We want to get to use our Spanish (such as...

... if is) and that's much easier in Denia. In Torrevieja, if you try to speak Spanish you are usually answered in English. This doesn't happen in Denia to anything like the same extent. I know that lots of ex pats, both Irish and English  seek out an English speaking community when they move to Spain but we want to immerse ourselves in the Spanish culture and language.  That's it basically.

Thanks, take care.

Hi Rory and Deirdre,

Just saw your message re moving to Denia as I haven't checked into the Forum for a while!  We moved to Denia from Ireland five years ago.  We love it here and would be happy to meet with you to chat when you visit.
