We moved to Denia on the Montgo, a year ago and haven't regretted it. In the middle winter, where we are on the mountain, we lose the sun at around 2.30pm. It's a trade-off of having a view or continuous sun. Even though the tourist season brings thousands more people all along the coast, it doesn't affect where we live. It is very quiet and safe. There are so many bars and restaurants in Denia that you could visit a different one everyday and still not visit them all. It is very cosmopolitan and the people are very friendly and helpful. It has more fiestas than anywhere else in Spain so is buzzing all year round. We have visited Moraira a few times and loved it too. It is much smaller but very pretty. There's not much beach to chose from but it all depends on what you're looking for. Denia is certainly a good place to base yourself and look around as there are many lovely smaller villages further inland that have cheaper property. Good luck with your search.

Moraira is almost dead in Winter.  Its a very beautiful area and reminds us of south of france.  you would be hard pressed to find anywhere better than Marina Alta.  We bought in Jalon Valley where you get more for your money but just 15 minutes from the sea and still busy in Winter.   Circumstances dictated a recent move and we really miss it so have a day out there now and again to get my little fix.  There are 14 villages in the Valley which leads down to Javea so there is usually smething to suit everyones taste and budget.   Be careful with orientation though as you can lose a lot of sunshine being protected by the mountains.   I guess you cant have everything.  Hope this helps.

Hi We would agree with all that has been said, on a side issue we found the people in Moraira to be a little older. Denia tends to be a younger vibe. While in Denia, you could travel 10 minutes down the road and there is another beautiful town called Javea well worth a look.

Javea is fab ! absolutely miss living there ( back in U.K. after health problems) looking to head back at some point

if you decide on Javea,  two ends you have “The Arenal” ( lots bars & restaurants along the prom and a little louder) and then you have “The Port” again a little more cosmopolitan, nice restaurant, bars shops etc

and then you have the “Old Town”nice little market, very Spanish with local traders, smaller Spanish style bars, restaurants, shops etc ( all areas offer something slightly different) my preference would definitely be “The Port” kindly note they are all within walking distance of each other ( or staggering) if you had a few.

Pop in and speak to Michael or Melissa ( bro & sis) they will always put you on the right track re properties. And there father has been there a fair few years. (https://www.rentalsjavea.com

Myself and Partner looking forward to our return at some point in next 12 months.

Good Luck

HI there

We are planning a trip in October to scout out Denia and Moraira . We will look to have a villa with pool and we would be using as a holiday place for the next 10 years and then retire there / spend most of our time there. I am a Spanish speaker and we love eating out , don't want to be overrun b...

...y tourists and live soemwhere with a vibrant heart with some cultural stuff going on ! I also love hiking and  we would like an international community too . Golf is also important .

Do you recommend any particular neighbourhoods within Denia and Moraira to explore? Any to avoid ? Any other towns we shoudl be cinsidering ?

Is there a shortage of stock ( 4 bed villas)  ? We have a property on the Costa Brava and there is nothing there to buy at the moment!

Many thanks

Hi,

We went through a similar process a couple of years ago and settled on Denia, we absolutely love it. Of course it depends on your priorities and Moraira and Javea are also lovely.

Our reasoning:

Denia feels Spanish, very cosmopolitan but not too British. It is a year round place, and doesn't feel shut down in Winter (our favourite time) with lots of fiestas and cultural life. Its a real foody place and we love to eat out, going by bike and wobbling safely home.  La Sella golf is an excellent 27 hole course in Denia.

A few days in the central, La Posada Del Mar, hotel will give you a great feel for Denia.

Hi just to add to the info re Denia..

It is a fabulous place to live! Cosmopolitan and life to it all year and wonderful different areas to live on the edge of it such as along ctra las marinas where just off the beach road you will find streets lined wit palm trees that have beautuful villas all nr walking distance yo the playa and grrat choice of bars! There is life upto 3km but too quiet further down outside of summer. As said in other comments the villas on the Montgo have uncredible views but many do not get the sun all day or the winter sun. Have a fab trip exploring!
