Seems at present, original documents are needed to return to Spain. Even then, some Airlines may prove difficult at check in.

Thanks Rower, a comprehensive summary of what's happening on the ground. I've heard of people in "administrative limbo", as the article describes it, having explained their situation to the Spanish Embassy in the UK and receiving a letter from the Embassy that has allowed them to travel and gain entry to Spain. I suggested it as an option for another member, Mark, who was scheduled to fly today - it will be interesting to hear his feedback.
Best wishes,
Kim

Thanks Mark. Good luck for next Sunday!
In the meantime, Gov.uk have updated their website this afternoon to confirm that UK citizens who are in possession of their TIE approval, even if they don't have the card yet, can return to Spain - relevant extract plus link to Entry Requirements section:
"Additional requirements for UK nationals resident in Spain
"If you are resident in Spain, you should also carry the appropriate proof of residency documents as well as a valid passport when you travel. Spanish authorities have clarified that either the A4-size or credit card sized green EU registration certificates, the “Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión Europea”, or the new TIE card, the “Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero” are valid proof of residency for UK nationals who wish to return to their homes in Spain.
"Spanish Authorities have confirmed that, as a temporary measure, those UK nationals who can prove that they have started their residency process in Spain, but who do not yet have their TIE card, should be allowed to board flights and return to Spain if they show a valid “resguardo de solicitud o renovación de tarjeta de extranjero” document. This temporary measure is in place from 4 January 2021 until 10 January 2021 inclusive."

Hi all,
The UK government had asked Spain to confirm what documentation is required to gain access to Spain and they have now updated gov.uk website:

SUMMARY
Still current at: 30 December 2020
Updated: 30 December 2020
Latest update:Updated information on documents accepted as proof of residency for entry to Spain. (‘Summary’ and 'Entry requirements' pages)
"If you are resident in Spain, you should carry your residence document (the green paper EU residence certificate or the new TIE), as well as your valid passport when you travel. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that only those residents who can prove their status as residents through the green paper EU residence certificate or the TIE card may enter Spain."
This answers the question about whether people can enter Spain with approved resolution documents, rather than a TIE - and the answer is No.
Kind regards,
Kim
my husband and i bought a property in 2005 - obviously we have nies but not full residencia -got a bluish/green card with numbers on it - but that dont mean a thing to me - my husband died on 4th jan of covid so at some point got to come to spain to see bank manager and solicitor - our cards in the apartment but i do have the numbers in my book - will that be sufficient for a re entry into spain - as and when we can

Hi,
I'm so sorry to hear that your husband has passed away, I hope you're as well as can be expected under the circumstances.
I'm confused by the documentation you say you have. The NIE confirmation is a white, A4 piece of paper and you would have one each. The "Certificado de Registro" (what we Brits call "residencia" but often called, confusingly, the "NIE" by the Spanish) is either a green A4 sheet of paper, or more recently, a green credit-card sized piece of paper. Have you ever lived permanently in Spain?
It's going to be very difficult for you to get through border control in the UK or Spain without your original documentation, but your circumstances are exceptional and I would suggest contacting the Spanish Embassy in the UK and ask for their help. You'll probably need to send them a copy of your husband's death certificate, but hopefully that will be sufficient for them to provide you with written authorisation to enter Spain (I'm assuming the UK's lockdown would allow you to leave in this exceptional case):

I hope you're able to get this sorted.
Best wishes,
