Hi my electric tripped out but the trip inside the house didn't trip.i had to call out electrician who reset it at the end of the street. I have a coral 20 years old. I was advised to upgrade my electrics to stop this happening again. Has anyone else had this problem or can offer any constructive advice.

Thanks

Happens a lot. Houses are contracted for a certain amount of power and you pay a daily rate depending on your contract per KwH.

Older houses may have 3.3Kw contract which gives you a maximum of 15A. Modern houses with all the things we have require a minimum 5.75Kw which gives you 25A.

You need a boletin (certificate) from an approved electrician to show your wiring can take the increased power and then the electric company will upgrade the power to your requirement.

Note that things like electric cookers, kettles and hair dryers are very power hungry so try and avoid using them all at the same time when the aircon is on etc.

The amount you are contracted for will be shown on your electrickery bill.

It could be that the previous owners have reduced in incoming amount of power to reduce the standard charges. This is what had happened when I purchased my house. It had been empty for a while due to the previous owner having to return to the UK. Whilst they were away and putting it up for sale they reduced the incoming supply to 1KW (the minimum I believe) to reduce there costs. I went to the Iberdrola desk in a carrefour store and they increased it again no problem. It cost 76euro and an increase in my monthly standing charge. I didn't need to show any boletin (certificate) from an approved electrician as they could see on the system that it was originally higher. I increased it to 4KW and haven't had any issues since. You just need to work out what amount works for you depending on the amount of appliances you would potentialaly run at 1 time.

If the power trips again, just go to your meter and press the reset button. No need to call an electrician.

Hi I did get my electric upgraded cost about 500 euros all above board including certificates for iberdrola. However when it trips now it trips at end of street and I don't have a key for the box. Is this a common problem as a new trip box is fitted at end of street.

Yes, it is a common problem now they've fitted the smart meters in. Used to be it would trip in your house and you could reset it. Now it trips out at the meter. Only trips out in the house if you have a problem, not if you exceed the power supply. Unusual if you have had it upgraded so may need someone to check why.

If you are on a community, the president or committee member should have a key to access the cupboard so you can reset it. If not then it has to be your provider that you contact to reset it. They can either do that remotely or send someone out to access the cupboard depending on which system was installed.
