Hi

We've had constant problems with the filling of XARELTO 20mg on prescription. Some months are OK, some months are refused. Various reasons given, it's the end of the financial year for Health System they're cutting back, or your medical condition is not subject to XARELTO, and finally this week told that prescription issued by cardiologist (issued 14th October on foot of consultation and test results) has been cancelled.

We are EU citizens, valid SIP card, residency, all paperwork in place and up to date. I was prescribed and took this medication in France for 8 years before moving to Spain. The cardiologist has said it's essential I continue, it will be a lifelong health problem.

My husband is fluent in Spanish, so he's not misunderstanding anything the Pharmacy is explaining.

On the off chance someone has had this same experience and knows how to resolve it..... we need your help please!!!

We know we have the option to pay for the medication each month, expensive at almost 100 euro. But there must be another option?

Sorry the post is long, but we're desperate at this stage.

Thank you

Pauline

Hello

I had  a similar experience a few years ago with a blood thinner I was taking prescibed by a cardiologist), went to see my GP who looked it up & suggested an alternative. The pharmacist  said mine  was  a brand name &  other companies made the product , with the same content,   under different names ( checked boxes against original).  In   pharmacies I usually get offered one of the others but I know now, they are ok. Go and ask your GP for advice...

Cheers

Thanks elinspain

We've been to our GP... she says all she can do is prescribe a branded name of Aspirin called Acido Acetilsalicilico. My cardiologist tells me it will not give me the protection I need.

Appreciate your reply

Hello,

Oh dear I hoped it would be  easily resolved, as mine was, as anything heart related is such a worry.

I was told sometime later, by a cardiologist at Torrevieja hospital I didnt really need that product but might do 'one day' However it was more dangerous to take me off it then, than leave me on it, so I am still taking it, its the spanish equivolent of warfarin called SINTROM..  Good luck I hope you can find a solution.

Cancellation may have occurred for NOT buying within a certain period.

Thanks for that suggestion, but we presented the prescription within 2 days of it being issued. We were then asked to call back a few days later, then told it was cancelled.

Hi Pauline (from another Pauline) I too take Xarelto which my Dr put me on 2 yrs ago instead of warfarin after 10years, as it would save me the INR tests especially while in Spain. As we were in Spain longer due to lockdown and ferry cancellations I was horrified to need to pay 84€ for a months supply at farmacy. Came with 3 months supply, so I bought Spanish warfarin and took as my old prescription used to be and thankfully was fine with it. Now back to UK Xarelto (didn't tell my GP what I, d done) . I think your problem is impacted on finance, as they are so expensive. My months supply of warfarin cost me 9€ instead. They do same job but no testing needed with Xarelto. They do it a different way but end result is same before anyone else disagrees with my comment. Maybe your GP can suggest an alternative that is not so costly.

Hi Pauline

Thank you for your email. Yes, personally I think it's the cost for Spanish too, though I think they are reimbursed by the French system eventually? My GP knows the problem I'm having, has issued Aspirin. I tok that 1 month, until latest cardiologist consultation, she was appalled and insists xarelto is the only medication I should take. Hence she issued new prescription, which as I say, has been cancelled by the Health System.

I'm hoping for further help from this forum, I just don't know how to follow this up with the Health System, it's so stressful.

Regards

Pauline

Whilst I am in full sympathy with your problem, you may just have to accept the cost. My elderly mother, aged 94, who has been here for 60 years and is entitled to everything, still has to pay for some of her prescriptions, so I would imagine this applies to the Spanish also.

Thanks Stephanie, I recon you're right!! And we will pay. But I want to be sure we've exhausted all possibilities before we spend so much each month
