There are a lot of people who speak and understand English, even read English but if they are of a generation they may not be able to write in English. Since this is an open forum I fail to see why anyone has to comment because someone has written in a different language, I have noticed that some "native" people here have obviously forgotten how to phrase or spell in English. No wonder the world is in the shape it is if a single comment in a different language generates three pages of........

An old lonely woman comes looking for company and gets criticism for not writing in English because apparently "its an english forum" even though it states nowhere that it's is. I have a big heart and alot of empithy (I never used to) and I really felt for her because she felt bullied away from a...

... site that's ment to bring people together. I wrote something on another post a few day ago, I even said I hope Alex was watching about nastiness and how more people will leave if it keeps happening and it's just happened.

I totally agree.  One day we might just be in the same situation as this lady.  All she wanted was a bit of empathy, and now she's left the forum.  I do hope this forum is not exclusively for Anglophones - I can't see anywhere that it states it's only for English speakers.  How many British pensioners speak.German well enough to post on a forum?  I'm embarrassed and sad that the lady has left the group 😔 😪 😕

Indeed, I'm reminded of the repeated scene from "League of Gentlemen" - a scenario often shown at that local shop whereby the quote is something along the lines of "this is a local shop, for local people".

Substitute local for English and that's what a handful of individuals have done over the last few days. I hope you are ashamed of yourself.

The reality is this is an open forum for all and sundry trying to live, holiday and basically enjoy their life in Spain. When did some people's manners fall by the wayside?

Is it beyond most people here to actually constructively help this lady rather than witter on about what language is being used on this site/post? I think it took quite a bit of character and honesty for her to post this in the first place. A shame that so many of the responses are not only entirely unhelpful but also smack of a Little Englander attitude

I didn't realise it had to be exclusively in English.   I've seen posts in Spanish here before.  I think it's a bit mean to exclude this lady just because she's writing in German.  She's obviously a bit lonely and is reaching out to people for help, just like you or I might do.

Can't you just use an electronic translator to find out what she's saying?  It's not hard.  I do hope your comments haven't made her feel unwanted....

...

Very kind and empathetic well done, why do Brits come to spain if they're going to continue their past time of  being non inclusive

Just my 2 cents worth but while i fully understand how people may feel about this from both sides, a couple things that came into my head, the lady could have easily done the translation in her original post to English (given that probably the majority of people on here are probably english), it would also have helped if she stated that she could speak english / or if not then did anyone on here that could speak german could communicate with her, remember she wanted to meet up in person so it could be awkward if you can't communicate with each other (even if you both had a little Spanish it could be possible, after all your living in Spain, we all need to make a bit of effort IMO , sadly many do not).
