Hi,

Has anyone been stopped or know of anyone who has been stopped at border control for overstaying their Schengen days?

The only people I have heard of are those who have not had their passports stamped but that wasn't even in Spain it was in Poland on a stag do weekend.

From what I see on my frequent trips the border guards are not interested and don't have the time to actually calculate how many days you have stayed.

Moreover, after all the costs of Alicante airport installing biometric/computerised scanners we are still waved aside to border control to have our passports stamped so the scanners are a waste of time for us, and will be forever while we have the need for a stamp.

I look forward to any responses.

Cheers,

Leo

The biometric scanners are usually in use at Alicante airport. 3rd country residents get their passports stamped after passing through the scanners.

Biometric scanners are due to be phased in gradually, with phase 1 starting in Oct this year and phase 2 to begin in April 2023. Then things will get interesting when all the schengen area information becomes available to each country.

Tony, I think that you're referring to the new EES. Biometric scanners are already in use at Alicante airport.

I very much doubt whether they will get this system up and running anytime soon. It's been delayed a number of times already, although It's not surprising though when you think about what it's designed to do. Connect to every airport, port, border crossing throughout the Schengen area and scan all 3rd country passports, connect & consult with a central database to calculate validity of entry/exit dates, all in real time without increasing queues at passport control.

My grandad who was a WW2 fighter pilot managed to get from Germany to Spain without anybody stopping him to stamp his passport.

I’m sure it’s still possible if you are that way inclined.
