The first cicada in our garden started chirruping away a couple of days ago. They're noisy blighters, but they're always a sign that August has come.
Their camouflage is so good it took me a while to find one, but once you do they don't fly away unless they're disturbed, so it's possible to capture a picture.
jim down in the dunes they have been there for 2 or 3 weeks
I always call the noise they make as electrical . Its unbelievably loud for such a little creature!

I'd guess the sand warms up quicker than the soil, so they come out earlier in the dunes. Or perhaps they're a different variety. On Formentera they were out in the first two weeks of June, and that was in sand. Here inland it's always this time of year.

We're in the campo behind Albatera and we've had them for 2 months now! Very noisy, although they go quiet immediately if you tell them off! LOL I've yet to actually see one so it's lovely to see that photo Jim, thank you. Now I know what makes all that racket. :)

We have them in our garden Jim in san luis wondered what the noise was as it is our first August here in Spain. I haven't actually seen one yet but now i know what i am looking for.How long do they stay for usually?

They're only out for a few weeks - they spend most of their lives underground.
They're so well camouflaged that you need to get near to where the noise is coming from, then give the tree or whatever a shake, and hope it flies off somewhere else. Ours never travel very far, so it's usually possible to see where they land. Even knowing that, they can still be difficult to spot.
