My understanding is:

  • If you live here permanently but have not applied for or do not have Residencia, you can register on the Padron but must renew every 2 years.
  • If you live here permanently and have applied for or you already have Residencia, you can register on the Padron but must renew every 5 years.
  • If you do not live here permanently then you cannot register on the Padron.

Someone I knew wasn't resident, but wanted to buy a car. The car dealer (rightly or wrongly) insisted that he needed an up-to-date Certificado de Empadronamiento (padron certificate). As a non-resident, the guy didn't have one and so he went to the town hall to get the 'official' answer.

The town hall told him "just pretend you live here all the time"!

So there you go, that's the official answer!! Haha.

Geoff.

Prompted by TonySue, and with Brexit in mind, non-EU citizens living here have to renew their padrón registration every two years if they don't have a permanent residencia card.

We registered on the Padron yesterday.  For a non-resident you need to renew every 2 years.  For a resident it is every 5 years.  The confusion may be related to the document you receive when you register.  This document is only valid for 3 months, so in the unlikely event tha...

...t you have to produce physical proof that you are on the Padron after this 3 month period you must go to the Ayuntamiento and ask them for an updated copy of your Padron certificate.

At the end of the 3 month period the document expires but you are still registered on the Padron, you just do not have the document to prove that if you need one.  Hope this makes sense.

As we are not here for more than 3 months a year we are not entitled to be on the Padron. This is official. Thank you for your help. Regards, Susan

Don't do it - it's illegal to register on the padrón if you're not resident.

I can't give you the full picture as the website is acting up a bit. However, the requirements are detailed here:

https://www--orihuela--es.insuit.net/alcaldia-y-atencion-al-ciudadano/concejalia-de-estadistica/padron-municipal-de-habitantes/

If you're using Google Chrome, just right-click and tell it to translate to English.

We now know we can’t be on the Padron as we spend less than 3 months a year here and only use the house for ourselves and family 🙂 thank you for your reply, Su
