Can anyone advise me please. We purchased an English car. Spanish plates from a couple selling up.  The change of ownership was done via Solicitor at a cost of €280

We collected the deed changed into our name but the solicitor said we had to go back to her in January to pay the road tax.

Can we not tax it ourselves.?

Any help would be appreciated

If the car has been transferred into your name then you should be getting the tax bill from the suma office delivered to your address, of which can then be paid at any bank.

Does it cost that much to transfer ownership of a car?

We bought a Spanish Registered car at the end of January this year and the people we bought it from took us to their solicitors and paid the fees as part of the purchase price, we have received the log book from Traffico and we were told whoever owns the car from 1st Jan pays for that years Suma (tax) the bill will go to them, then the next one due if we still own the car in Jan will be paid by us.

Taking the advice from the forum we went to Suma today and paid the bill for 2018 as the previous

Owner has not paid even though she was responsible for this payment ..  Her bank account has been closed and she has returned  to UK. We went back to the solicitor updated her. As the sale of the car had been done through her. She said she assumed it had been paid by the original owner.....Hopefully, when January comes twe can set up a direct debit.

I warn you to check if you find yourself in a similar position.

Thank you all again for your help

Regards to the payment of tax, the person who was the registered owner of the vehicle on the 1st. of January is responsible for the payment for that year, therefore if you purchased the car after that date you are not responsible for the tax.
