Thanks for that Kim I’ll be sure to have a read. We haven’t visited La Marina yet and are hoping to in the next couple of weeks to get a feel for the place. As a different option to full residency I’ve been weighing up the potential to spend half the year in the UK and half in Spain which I...

... believe we can do with the relevant visa although this would be about 15 years away and a lot can change in that time. Where would I find these articles you mentioned?

Andy

Sorry, what visa would that be? If you have a non lucrative visa, which most people go for, you are only allowed to leave Spain for a maximum of 6 months in any one year and a maximum of 10 months in your first 5 years of residency. Therefore 6 months and 6 months would not be possible. The golden visa (buying a property for over 500k or investing in a Spanish company) only means you have to spend a week a year in Spain.

I think the digital nomad visa also has a time out restriction as well once you apply for residency and I think for EU citizens the time limits apply if you leave the EU area.

Hi Andy,

It's 90 days, rather than 3 months, but yes, you could do a maximum of 90 days in Spain and then 90 days in the UK before you return to Spain again.  Bear in mind though that this 90/180 days rule applies to the whole of Schengen so if, for example, you decided to drive down to Spain via France, your 90 days would start counting down the day you arrive in France, not Spain.

Kind regards,

Kim

Is there any limit to how long you can do that for? Can’t find anything on line. Really appreciate your advice on this Kim. Really helpful!

Hi Andy,

No time limit, you could do 90 days in Spain, 90 days in UK, ad infinitum.

It may be best to keep back a few days as contingency for emergencies, as penalties are applied to overstayers.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim,

Thanks for that. I think the next thing we need to do is get over there. It looks amazing!

I’ve owned property here since 2003 (2 bed 1 bath), I bought it to use and for family to visit. I didn’t go down the route of letting to holiday makers as I didn’t want to get involved with the Spanish tax system.

I bought off plan from the builder, a house in a street. No community fees. I pay my IBI (council tax), unlike the UK it doesn’t go up year on year!

In my area waste is paid as part of my water charges, average €75/quarter.

My electricity averages €50/month, although I don’t use the A/C a lot. Also includes cooking.

I had central heating installed last Dec ( I have mains gas) and my dec - Feb gas bill was €102, be interesting to see next winter.

Initially I paid none resident property tax, however now I’m resident that doesn’t apply.

Do your research, make sure to use a solicitor if you buy, and enjoy!
