Hi, my father in law recently died, can anyone please advise how ownership of his car can be transferred to my mother in law. Some say it could cost up to 400 euros.

Probably it will be more than that. Before thinking in transfer anything the new legal owner must be determined (by inheritance I assume) and that involves time and money. You don't need a lawyer, see a notary public and he tells you how to proceed. Inheritance tax declaration (some 36 pages) must be filed within 6 months, lack of doing so involves fines and late fees.

Hi Shaun,

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Is the car in just your father-in-law's name?  If so, before you can transfer ownership, your mother-in-law will need to inherit the car, in the same way as she would other joint assets, such as a property (if jointly owned, she still needs to inherit her husband's 50% share of the vehicle).  It's important, therefore, to ensure that the car is included in the Inheritance Deed.  Without transferring ownership to your Mum, she would not be able to sell the car, should she wish to do so.

I helped a friend to do this last year and would recommend Orke in Los Montesinos:

Kind regards,

Kim
