Good Afternoon,

My Husband and I moved to Spain 4 months ago and have been looking for work, My husband currently has his own business in the UK but would like to wind things down there and be working full time here in Spain.

We would like to live premanently here is Spain with our young family but that is all dependant on availability to work here, so far I have sent C.V.'s to many company's that speak English but many of them do not even reply, I have also applied for any job vacancies that arise but again they do not reply.  Does anyone have any suggestions to make this transition a little easier on our family, if we are unable to stabilise work here we may have no choice but to move back to the UK as my husband does not want to travel back and forth long term, he has spent the last 15 years working away from his family on long Insurance Contracts and now we would like to all be together, so we do not want to move back to the UK as we love it here and our daughter refuses to move, she said she would sleep in a tent if we wanted to move back to the UK lol!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I am sure we are not the first working family that have moved to another Country and other people may have experienced the same issues so I am hoping that they may have some advice that they can offer as I am afraid I have exhausted other avenues.

Although he is in Construction he would be willing to take on something different as well, and travel is not an issue as he is used to long journeys to get to site.

Many Thanks

Pamela

Hello, unfortunately there are an overwhelming amount of people trying to find these kinds of jobs. The situation is that there are very few employed positions in the building industry and they would mainly be Spanish firms who would employ Spanish people first; there is still a huge unemployment situation here. To subcontract or work for himself your husband will have to register as autonomo, self employed, which immediately involves the tax office and social security agencies. Payments have to be made monthly, although there are reductions for the first few months. Your clients, if you do not speak Spanish, will be the expat community. Many of these are retired with limited incomes. Pay rates are nowhere near U.K. rates. The authorities are clamping down on unregistered illegal workers and the fines are swinging. You will also require fully comprehensive private medical insurance, which complied with Spanish requirements, for every member of your family; the EHIC is only for tourist emergencies and may well be invalid for the British after Brexit. If you are hoping to make enough money to support your family, it is unfortunately a pipe dream. There are successful expat companies and trades here, but have usually been here for some years and have worked long and hard. Unless you have a special skill unavailable here you are unlikely to be able to survive for long without a huge cushion of money behind you. I am sorry to be so harsh, but you are one of a myriad of people and this is the situation.
