I have just received my latest Iberdrola bill online notification, it claims I have used 3.3KW of electricity between 1st and 25th December.

As the property has been unoccupied with the electricity turned off from 28th November, what might be the reason for this?

I noticed the bill for when it was unoccupied in August had the same usage and hence suspected the previous owners still had access before I moved in and so changed the locks.

What part of the bill states you have used 3.3KW as the Consumption Section will be KWH, otherwise it maybe the Standing Charge and Meter Equipment Rental that form part of the Bill regardless of whether the Electric is on or off in your property.

I am now guessing that under "Bill Summery" in the "Energy" box, they state the tariff standing charge for 3.3KW and just add the amount you consume to that "Energy" box amount without differentiating? My previous bill for when I was there looked like this:-

 ENERGY 23,90 €
SERVICES AND OTHER ITEMS 4,06 €
VAT 21% s/27,96 € 5,87 €

Hi Pete. Not too worry your bill is correct and no Electricity has been consumed whilst it has been switched off.

Active Enery Peak and Active Energy Off Peak readings of 0kw confirm this.

The 3.3 kw is the Electrical supply capacity you are signed up for and refers to the maximum load in kw you are allowed to use at any one instant within your property. I.e. you are contracted Not to try and use Power via lights, sockets, heating, cooking and washing etc at any one time that would add up to more than 3.3 kw. The Trip switch in your fusebox or in your Electricity meter is designed to trip out if that happens and will need resetting after you have reduced some of your power consumption.

The items you have been billed for are : Standing charge at 9.76 euro,  Meter rental at 0.64 euro,  Home Electrical protection ( optional ), for your fixed Electrical wiring and for some appliances at a discounted charge of 2.41 euro. Total of 12.81 euro, add tax of 2.69 euro and your total bill is 15.50 euros.

Thanks Les, wish they had a separate box for usage and tariff though. Next month I expect I will be back with my next bill asking the same question though!

On your electric bill or any thing else do not hesitate to ask, even after years of living here in Spain I am still learning so don't worry, just ask.

No probs Pete.

Even though iberdrola are part of the same Energy conglomerate  as Scottish  Power, the way they bill you is entirely different.

As John  says , we all learn new things every day, and this Forum is a great place to do just that.

Hi Peter, Les has given a good summary of the billing. If you want more info, look at:

https://www.costablancaforum.com/area/almorad%C3%AD-spain-11/utilities-electric-gas-water-recommendations-advice-in-almorad%C3%AD-29/jims-guide-iberdrola-part-1-bills--contracted-power-68330/

Also ask yourself if you really want to keep the two protection items, as they're optional.
