Very easy to get things done qhen you’re living here full time but not so easy trying to arrange things back in England!

As for using reputable builders, he was recommended by the people on this site!

Hi

Your comment is valid but unfortunately you are leaving yourself open to abuse by these kind of people. I’m not full time yet and that only makes me more diligent. There are good tradesmen out there and plenty of money grabbing low life’s who take advantage of people like you.

This forum is powerful and generally is a good source of information and advise, but you still need to do your own due diligence.

Perhaps name them on here but be true and factful so as not to cause yourself problems. I would never use anyone on here with a bad name in the instance you have described.

The problem with name and shame is that sometimes the problem could be with peoples own personal expectations of work. I’m not telling you to suck eggs but when engaging someone, you both must be totally clear of what is being done for the money you are paying. Get a written quote clearly defining what is going to be done as this protects both parties. You do not want to get into a situation where they say this is “extra to what was agreed”, or “we didn’t include that in our price”.

Any reputable person would be happy to provide a written quote as it protects them just as much as it does you.

Don’t take this information as being condescending..........it’s just a bit of friendly advice that could prove helpful in the future.

I was given the details of someone who was supposed to be a car valeter. He turned up with a bucket, rag and an empty squeeze bottle! We all get them...

Good luck with your quest!

Hi

Yes i agree with all that but you can only research good tradesmen by peoples recommendations and that’s exactly what we did.

He replied to enails etc promptly, we met hum at our house and he genuinly had every intention of starting the work as his tools are there and our neighbour also saw him.

Unfortunately for us, he left suddenly before starting the work and has not been returned texts, emails etc since!

As others have suggested, we are not stupid and we feel we did all we could beforehand.

Have you got a consultant that handles your affairs in Spain? They should be able to get the ball in motion to see how you can get some or all of your money beck.

My consultant has held the money to be paid while work was done and then released amounts to the workers as and when it was the correct time and I have never been let down.

I sincerely hope you recover the money. Best regards.

This is applicable whereever you live, Spain, U.K  Ireland, South Africa.  Builders are apt to go bankrupt after taking your money l. Bit like 10 year warranties on double glazing/patio doors, not many around to claim on the warranty
