On the back under 11 it says 23.06.39, that's when you reach the age of 70 years and in the UK that's when you will need a medical.

On the front of the licence expiry is shown as 23.03.30, that's correct, if you were still living in the UK you would just have to renew it.

So it makes your age now 51, if I am correct.

correct.

Thank you John56 about the medical side, as this was not explained to me by getlegalinspain although I only had 4 years left on my original licence, Much appreciated my friend, have a good evening, stay safe and healthy.

Just a update, when I was handed back my passport the following day, I was also given a receipt for my original British licence that had been photo copied and stamped with the wording which I have translated is

The original driving license is deposited in the local traffic office of Elche for the processing of the exchange/renewall of your license for the Spanish equivalent.

getlegalinspain informed me that this covering document would be accepted if I was pulled over by the police and to carry it when driving.

May I add also getlegal informed me the new licence could take up to 3 months to receive, its been a month so far, I do have my own copy of my British driving licence and I have checked today on the UK D.V.L.A website and its still there under my old UK address, so I guess there has been no movement between Spain and the UK driving agencies ?

I wonder how I would get on Renting a car here or back in the UK? answers on a post card please.

we've renewed our uk licenses in march this year so more or less 10 years left but when I asked about exchanging because I don't hit 70 until 2039 they advised that an exchange wasn't possible and I should go for an application rather than exchange. I have no problem with this in principle as I c...

Perhaps you should look into it a bit more and as John56 stated he had over 8 years on his old UK licence and exchanged it with no problem. Now as for getlegal they seem to be contradicting themselves stating they advise that a exchange was not possible? and yet you should go for a application rather than a EXCHANGE!! I feel you should do some homework on this and let us know if you find the appropriate one for you. perhaps find another company for advice, you never know, as the customer is always right, as they say. good luck and keep us informed please.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Today 14th October I received my Spanish driving licence, my application/appointment date was Thursday 3rd September = 42 days in total.

Is it a requirement to use a Spanish driving license or is there a grace period? We will be arriving in Spain around 26th October to move into our new home so I am sure I am going to using this forum to ask what you may consider daft questions.

If you are going to obtain Spanish residency, you are legally required to exchange/renew your uk driving licence for a Spanish one. With brexit looming and not many deals being done between the uk and eu, grace periods does not look forthcoming, but you never know, so far a lot of brits have been getting their residency and driving licences done before 31st December 2020.

Hi Ruth,

AS EU citizens, people from the UK resident in Spain used to have up to 2 years to exchange their licence; however, Brexit has changed that and the www.gov.uk website recommends that you make the exchange before 31 December:

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Patsy,

€200 each is too expensive.  I agree with Peter and would also recommend GetLegalInSpain, friends of mine are currently using them for TIEs and driving licences.

We used Matt at One Way Services, also in C.Quesada.  He charged €120 each which included the medical and driving us to Trafico in Cartagena.  After everything was complete, he even bought us coffee and a cake, before bringing us home again.

You could save yourself some money by doing it yourself, but it's so easy to let a reputable gestor do it for you - they can even make the appointments for you online.

Kind regards,

Kim
