I have seen several questions on this forum about bank charges.

My wife and I bank with Sabadell. When we bought our Spanish home, our solicitor set up the account, and to be honest we have paid little attention to it.

So, we were in our bank this morning to make some arrangements, and now understand things better.

We had a basic "Sight" account. This provides debit cards, and the ability to set up direct debits/standing orders etc. This costs 35 Euros/quarter (but this will soon increase to 40 Euros/quarter).

Next up is an "Expansion" account. This enables credit cards. The cost is lower, at 15 Euros/quarter. To qualify for this account, you must transfer, consistently, a minimum of 700 Euros/month in. A savings account can be added at no extra cost.

There is the option of adding an "Investment" account. If you have one of these, the charges reduce to zero. To qualify, the Investment account must have 10K Euros in it.

Stop paying fees and change to Cajamar bank, "weferrent" account is online but does have a telephone helpline and if necessary you can do transactions in branch but then there is a small in branch fee. Apart from opening the account as a non resident, I have never had the need to visit a branch. This account is fee free to non residents too, must open in branch in non resident but residents can open online (online app doesn't recognise non res.Nie numbers). I joined after 12yrs of paying Sabadell fees March 2019 and already saved over 200€in fees. Free cards, atm use, direct debits and transfers all free. Google their website in english, app in english too. Wish I,d changed years ago.

Morning all

I am now the unofficial Bancsabadell account expert 😂😂😂 (joke)

Thanks madcatwoman, found the descriptions.

Expansión account - €15 quarter fees, unless you maintain an average balance of €2500 constantly over the year, and pay in €700 per month, when the charges are then waived. I think I’ve got that right. 😉

I’ve got a key account and it gives a description of what’s included. No mention of what the charges are how to avoid them tho’ 😫😫😫

Maybe this explains why some appear the be charged and others not? 🤪🥂

Hi paulsav

I’d understood, from a recent thread, that Declan2 had tried to do this and reported that he had been advised at the bank the “weferrent” was no longer available? 🤪🥂

I thought he was told there was a condition of needing a minimum balance of 1037€ balance throughout the year to maintain it free? He pm, d me and said he,d investigate further but hasn't got back to me.

I feel sure there must be a misunderstanding as it's still advertised on website and no conditions mentioned.

I will pm him to see if he,s got further. Like other experiences sometimes agents don't always know what's going on.

Just checked the thread. There was mention of a minimum balance for a standard account. This is when it’s really useful for members to come back and let us know the outcome. Great if you PM and post back 🤪🥂

Hi Ange

Just phoned Cajamar and they told me the weferrent account is available (without any conditions) and a non resident must open in branch by "becoming a customer". They then are given a user code and can open the wefferrent account online as a resident can. Maybe we were lucky to have a nice agent who did it all for us. Lol. However a trip to the branch and it is still available to non residents without fees.

Another update, I telephoned them and yes weferrent account is still available to non residents. New process is go into a branch and ask to "become a customer"with relavent ID, s of course and you are given a customer no. You then can open online through website a weferrent account using customer no. I have received msg from Declan who said he, d telephoned but couldn,t get through, but noticed the NIE Id selection on website no longer an option. Only residency or NIF no available. He,s away at the moment coming back next week so might try again. I knew the Nie identity selection was not recognised if non resident on applying online hence was told go into branch. Maybe now they have to add TIE to selection? Who knows? It may seem a little more daunting as we were lucky enough to leave branch with ours all done but surely worth it for the savings. Shame my brain didn't become more determined until I,d lost over 2k€ in fees over time.

And I think that the problem for many of us; the multiple choice of what is needed. NIE?,NIF?,TIE? How, what etc

What I’m anxious to avoid is anything that might compromise my current easy access to my account. Like everyone, I’d like to avoid the charges, but I don’t want to get back to the U.K. and encounter problems, particularly at the moment when just travelling is so problematic

Let’s hope Declan comes back and gives an update on the current process. Good to know it’s available though 🤪🥂

Ange, I have easy access at all times, even paid my non res tax to Angar Taxation from UK. I hope Declan does continue, after all its only a small hurdle of the many bigger hurdles to navigate being in a different country.

That's interesting. Any idea why no charges?

As I stated because I was paying in a minimum of 700€ a month.
