I have seen several questions on this forum about bank charges.

My wife and I bank with Sabadell. When we bought our Spanish home, our solicitor set up the account, and to be honest we have paid little attention to it.

So, we were in our bank this morning to make some arrangements, and now understand things better.

We had a basic "Sight" account. This provides debit cards, and the ability to set up direct debits/standing orders etc. This costs 35 Euros/quarter (but this will soon increase to 40 Euros/quarter).

Next up is an "Expansion" account. This enables credit cards. The cost is lower, at 15 Euros/quarter. To qualify for this account, you must transfer, consistently, a minimum of 700 Euros/month in. A savings account can be added at no extra cost.

There is the option of adding an "Investment" account. If you have one of these, the charges reduce to zero. To qualify, the Investment account must have 10K Euros in it.

Thanks Kelvin, that’s helpful - we have a key account plus with them, do you know if that’s another name for the sight account?

Sorry, no.

Neither "Key Account" nor "Key Account Plus" were mentioned this morning.

Hi,

If you go onto their website or your online banking with them they give a list and description of all the accounts they have so you can find the one most suitable to you.

I've been using Expansion Account since I moved here years ago and don't pay any charges if I put 700€ into my account each month. As I'm currently unemployed due to Covid I take 700€ out of my account and put it back in. This was advised to me by the banking personnel who said as long as they see 700€ going in monthly it doesn't matter where it comes from. I've been doing this for quite a while and no bank charges have been made.

Sorry it's a bit long winded but hope it helps:)

Are you absolutely sure you are paying no charges? I also have an Expansion account, 700€ per month paid in etc., and my understanding was they introduced 15€/quarter charges for everyone on this account in January this year, unless you have additional products with them, like savings accounts. Check your statements.

Incidentally, interest levels on Spanish 'savings' accounts are derisory. You might be lucky enough to earn 10€ pa on a 10000€ account balance. Since you can still get around 1% per annum in the UK, ignoring fx rates, you are effectively paying 90€ per annum in lost interest, i.e. bank charges, if you go down that route with Sabadell.

I am in the same position as Madcatwoman, expansion account, minimum 700€ paid in each month, no other products, no fees, the Bank notified me my account was exempt from fees and everything has been good.

Hi madcatwoman

Can you give a link for the account descriptions please? When I read Kelvins post earlier this evening, I had a little google. They identify different accounts but I couldn’t find anything that gave criteria, or charges linked to the various accounts.

Anyone found anything?🤪🥂

That's interesting. Any idea why no charges?

Hi Angebadge,

If you go onto www.sabadell.com and select accounts from the bar along the top it gives a description and criteria for each account.:)
