It is not easy for aliens to marry in Spain. All necessary documents (birth certificates, proof of no impediment etc,) need to be translated by a sworn interpreter, legalized through diplomatic channels and finally authorized by the Spanish Ministry of foreign affairs. This usually takes various months and involves fees and costs. Better think twice or try Vegas.

Friends of mine intended to marry here in Spain but, after initial enquiries, gave up due to masses of red tape & bureaucracy which involved 3 countries England, Ireland & Spain. The time delays & costs involved , as Killjoy has said made it so difficult they eventually  went to Gibraltar & married there, it was so much easier to organise  &  much cheaper!

Thank you both but really want to marry in Spain and in our local ayuntamiento.  I have already started all the paperwork and got certificates needed from UK and Madrid just waiting for birth certificate verification then all will go for translation.  

I was hoping to get more of an insight into the actual ceremony, dress code etc

Hi Mandy, first of all, congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. It sounds as if you have already done all the hard work sorting out the paperwork so in comparison the actual ceremony will be easy. My wife and I live in the Campo near Orba and the ayuntamiento of our local village guided us as to what was required, although we also did our own research.

We dressed smart but not over the top and invited two friends as witnesses (they need to bring ID). Another couple of friends also came and took photographs. The ceremony took place in a meeting room, all in Spanish but very relaxed. My Spanish is limited but no problem. I then did my impromptu vows in English and the rest is history as they say. There was no charge for anything so we popped back a couple of days later with some cakes and chocolate etc which has endeared us to the staff. 

Also, after the wedding, we all retired to the local village bar, as you do for drinks and tapas and a few slices of the homebaked wedding cake. So, as I said at the start, you have done the hard work so now relax and enjoy.
