Hi I was thinking of driving my car from Ireland to Spain sometime and leaving it there to have when were over.  We just recently bought a holiday  home. Is it possible to register it in Spain so that I can obtain Spanish insurance for it. Dont think Irish insurance would cover it while in Spain permanently.  Many thanks

Annette

Hi Annette,

It’s not as simple as that any more (after Brexit 🤨)

You will get hit for import tax which I recently enquired about taking my 2014 Smax over and doing the same.

However my go to guy for changing plates said I would get slammed for 35-38% import tax 😬

Brexit was the worst thing ever for people living in Spain and for long term holiday makers.

hope this information is of assistance to youSorry oh!

Regards

Allan

Not a problem, you need proof of address in Spain but your property deeds will provide that.

Ignore anyone who may tell you that you need a padron, you don't and as non residents you are not entitled to sign on one anyway.

If you're Irish then the Brexit changes do not apply to you or your car.

Hi Darro,

Thanks for your reply.

So if your a resident (which I am and have a Villa in PF) does the tax not apply if I wanted to bring my UK vehicle over and register on Spanish?

Thanks Allan

I agree that Brexit has been a bad and pointless thing however for those who were legally living in Spain before Dec 31st. ultimately it has had mininal impact.

If you are Irish and your car is Irish registered, including NI, then you should be able to bring it over register it with just the usual fees and charges.

The Brexit driven import duties and taxes etc. mentioned should not apply.

Get in touch with Spanish number plates for expert advice.
Don't forget you will also need to factor in the price for annual on or off airport parking.

Hi Annette,

We are Irish and have a Spanish registered car here in Spain . We are not residents but can bring our car back to Ireland for 6 months . Irish insurance usually only covers 1 month . Tax and insurance is also cheaper .

Hi Annette,

As you're Irish, i.e. a citizen of another EU member state, this is fairly straightforward, albeit there will be costs involved.  Darro has given you the correct advice and like he and Cheryl, I would also recommend obtaining a quote from Leigh at:

Kind regards,

Kim
